Diabetes and Women's Health


DIABETES affects more and more women each passing year. Eight million Americans have been diagosed with diabetes and a new case is diagnosed every minute. As women, we need to be aware of this disease and how it can affect our health. The following are a few items of interest regarding this disease, some statistics and a few links that are interesting. Becoming aware of disease states is one of the Keys to Prevention.

Diabetes is a very frightening disease to many people. It can affect much more than the kidneys. Other areas include: heart, nerve endings, circulation problems, problems in pregnancy and others. According to the "Diabetes Fact Sheet, Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that adversely affects the body's ability to produce or use insulin a hormone necessary to permit the body to use food as energy.

REALITY STATISTICS ABOUT DIABETES:

Diabetics are 2 to 4 times more likely to have heart and vascular disease

Diabetics are 250% more likely to have a stroke

Diabetes is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease

Diabetes can cause life-changing disabilities

  • >50% of all leg amputations are due to Diabetes
  • Diabetes is the leading cause of all new blindless in adults 20-74 years
  • 60-70% of diabetics have some nerve damage
