Fetal Alcohol Syndrome has become the leading known cause of mental retardation in western civilization. (Journal of American Medical Association, 1991) Each year in the US, 5,000 babies are born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). As many as 50,000 babies are born with an alcohol-related disability. (March of Dimes, 1992) Alcohol causes more serious neurological damage to the unborn baby than all illicit drugs, including cocaine, heroin and marijuana. (Institute of Medeicine, 1996) FAS has no cure. FAS is 100% preventable. |
