Hi I live in Long Island
New York, and have been raising chickens and other fowl for about
40 years. I am not a commercial farm owner, only a backyard
farmer. On June 7th, I got up like any other morning to feed the
chickens, and check the hen house. I found what appeared at first
to look like a large rock. When I got closer and picked it up ,
it was a huge chicken egg. I then tried to find out what the
record was for the largest chicken egg. I called the New York
State agriculture dept, and they put me in contact with a doctor
at Cornell University. His name is Dr. Keshavarz. He is supposed
to be the far most authority on poultry egg production. He told
me that the average unusual egg is about .85 kilograms, and told
me to get it weighed and call him back . I didn't know where to
get it weighed at first. I tried a jewelry store, and it weighed
too much for their scale. Then I tried a pharmacy, and it was too
large for their scale. Then I thought of the Post Office . They
thought I was nuts at first, until they saw the size of the egg.
It weighed .24 or equivalent to 3.9 of a pound. Almost a quarter
of a pound. I then called the doctor back, and he said this could
be a new record. I then called a local T.V. station CH 55. They
immeadiately came out that day and reported it on the evening
news. Then CH 7 ABC called and they came out and sent a famous
local news reporter, N.J. Burkett. He was at my home from 11:00am
to 6:15pm. He did a live broadcast and told the story. This went
out in syndication all over the country. They did more research
and found although it did not break the record it was the largest
egg recorded in 35 yrs. It also ran in several newspapers across
the country but I do not know which ones. Now, the 99 thousand
dollars question is, what do I do with it? I would of course like
to sell it but who the heck would buy it? Please let me know if
you have any ideas? If you would like to run this letter in your
local newspaper or magazine, please let me know. By the way, the
hen is a sex link, and I think it's a cross between a Roadisland
Red and a White leghorn. But I am not sure. If you have any
questons please feel free to ask, or you may E-Mail me. Also feel
to post a copy of this on the poultry news group. Take care John
.
