First of all, I think your background is just wounderful, I can read it WITHOUT my glasses. I have known for about 6 months I have Neuropathy in my leggs. This is the worst pain I have ever had. I have diabetes, take 2 shots a day (90 IU) 2 Glucotrol pill . I had never heard of Neuropathy. What can I expect to happen? Will I be crippled. I just turned 62 years old in Feb. Don't have much of a life, too tired to go any place or do anything. So far my Dr. has given me Tylenol #3, finally gave me Neurontin 10 mg., which does not ease the pain. Does this nerve damage start in the back and sends the pain into the leggs? My Dr. suggested nerve block, said it was permenet but if I should hurt or burn my leg, I would not feel it, Can a person still walk if they ge a nerve block and do they still have feelings in thier legs? Sorry to ask so many questions, but need all the ans. I can get. Feel free to E-Mail me.

I'm one of many caught in this nightmare and just recently went on disability which I fought to the bitter end. I feel the need to get involved in the "fight" but have limited energy. The thing I'm most amazed about with this disease is the doctors' attit des. They seem to lose any compassion they had as they become frustrated with the disease. Can't they imagine how frustrating it is to us? Onward and upward. Thanks for the story.

I am a type 2 diabetic with nasty asthma, took a bad spill off my snowmobile onto L shoulder 2 years ago in Quebec. Was treated last year for "zingers" on L side of head, ocepidal nerve the pinched by muscles when under stress. Now the fingers and toes h ve started, see Neurogogist in early March and wanted to prepare with some knowledge. Your site is very informative but scares the devil out of me. It appears my lovely wife now has it. She is a charming 49 year old gal who has been a history teacher all of her adult life. Her feet and legs have been getting worse over the past year. I have numerous family members who have peripheral neuropathy. All of us have been diagnosed after an injury. I have herniated cervical and thoracic disks and neuropathy with a lot of pain. One of my sisters who has the neuropathy developed the symptoms you did after an injury to her lower back. She finally found a doctor who treats RSD, usually an anesthesiologist, which is what her injury resulted in. RSD is a disease that spreads, so you need to find a doctor right away who specializes in RSD. The p in has got to be stopped. Your symptoms sound like the late stage of RSD, which can begin within several months after the initial injury.The neuropathy you have is probably Hereditary Neuropathy with Predispositon to Pressure Palsy. I had a DNA test rec ntly which gave us a definite diagnosis. My sisters and I got the disease from my father who got it from his mother. I have 3 children and they all have the diseases. It is autosominal dominant which means you have a very high chance to passing it on t your children so genetic counseling is advised. You are around my age, so you probably already have children. You need to get a DNA test done for HNPP so you can tell your children what is wrong if they develop symptoms. With the symptoms you have, an the possibility it may be RSD, avoid any type of surgery and see another doctor. I have found that the 3 neurologists that I have seen don't seem to know beans and my pain is almost unbearable. I have asked my doctor to send me to a pain clinic for an valuation so I can get treated for the pain. I take tofranil antidepressants, and neurontin which is actually the best medication I have been on so far--15 years of pain. The neurontin (300 mg. 3 x a day) is truly helping a lot. My circulation is bette , and the spasms are not as severe. My sister with RSD is on neurontin also. See a different doctor--ask to go to a pain clinic and tell them what you want--a DNA test, and testing for RSD in addition to the peripheral neuropathy because it seems that pe ple with the peripheral neuropathy have more of a tendancy to develop RSD. i thank you webb page is on of the best i have ever seen. i have a lot of pain in my left leg. i'm taking vioxx 25mg a day, nurontin 300mg 4 times a day and oxyocin 10mg every 8 hours. i have also had 2 of the shot in the back which block the nerve pain. nothing seem to work.

I was glad to find your webpage. After much "doctoring" I have just been finally diagnosed with Small Axon Polyneuropathy, Idiopathic Progressive. I feel so alone and everyone thinks I am a hypochondriac. I have the blurred vision, slurred speech and chronic bowel pain. I worry secretly about MS since I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Chronic fatigue and Myofacial Pain Syndrome a long time ago. I haven't told the doctor yet about the Optic Neuritis. I try not to say too much about it because I have so many problems from an old car accident that everyone thinks I am a chronic complainer. I am still working but I have to really push hard t keep up. I work in a computer lab at a college. I have it easier now since most college students already have knowledge of most things these days. Heck they tell me stuff. I don't know how much longer I can keep walking but the doctor prescribed Neur ntin for me too. I am hoping it helps.

I have CIDP. I've had it 27 years. I was 29 yrs. old when I first got it. There was no name for it at that time. They just called it A-typical Guillian Barre. The first 8 years were the hardest. I relapsed three times. It has been a challenge living with this disease. I try to stay positive and focused and I live one day at a time. Blood tests came back negative for diabetes, vitamin B-12 deficiency, and syphillis(!); still waiting on results from lead/metal screening. Been diabetic over 15 years - insulin dependent 9. Have had Neuropathy growing for over 5 years. Been on aspirin - darvon - and now vicodin for an hour or two out of the house to drive my wife to the store a couple of times a week. 50 now and not looking to be 60. I have not been able to work since Oct 1997 and have not been able to get disability. Feet pain now runs to the ankle some times but maybe if I can get disability I can take better control of my diabetes and sloe down the Neuropathy. Maybe go get some sleep now. The foot pain keeps me up often till I can only sleep when exhausted. Thank for the nice web page and sharing your story. Cheers
