Q:(UK only) I want to use silver on black numberplates on my car, is this a problem?

A: This depends on the age of your car. If your car has a registration date of 31.12.72 or earlier you can use non-reflective numberplates with silver lettering on black background. You may however use the later numberplates on vehicles of any age. Remember that your registration plates must comply with the standard. (see below) Note how the new tax exemtion rule coincides with the number plate change, easy to spot if a car is tax exempt.

Q: I have seen a car with "fancy" lettering on the number plate, is it legal to have one?

A: Fancy lettering, i.e. inverse, script, or even plates that are very slim or small do not comply with the regulations. These regulations are very restrictive and you may be liable to a maximum fine of £1000 if your number plates do not comply. (UK: detailed information about the shape and letters are available on form V796 from your local post office, VRO, or the DVLA Swansea)
