In about 1973 Peter Brock (from the USA not Australia) did a very similar conversion using the alloy buick engine that the P76 was derived from. He used it to go off road to follow hot air ballooning.
Peter Brock owned Brock Racing Enterprises BRE who were commissioned by Nissan Japan to make sure that Nissan were competitive in racing. He built Paul Newmans race 240Z's and marketed a whole range of competition Nissan parts.

Great Site! My old man has a 91 Caravelle and I've been talking to him about a Holden V6 coupled to a Porsche tranny. Any ideas on the cost and ease of this job?
I've spent the last 5 years building my Baja bug. It's powered by a 2.3L T1 engine with all the mods except fuel injection which will come with time. My gearbox has modified ratios and I'm running a 2.5 inch lift kit. I'm running a swing axle box at prese
t and I'm disappointed with the ground clearance but I'll eventually build a whole new pan with an 1800 kombi box and adjustable front end. Paint is BMW metallic and the job cost me $1800 in materials only. Fully reclining sports seats, full new upholster
and Cd stack, amplified stereo.
Thanks again and it's good too see clean photos.

Looks like you used a Kennedy Engineered adapter. I tried using a Buick V-6 on mine 68. It
worked. It was one of those Howard Hughes type of experiments. I just wanted to see if I
could do it. I have plans for the Pheonix camper van that was issued by Pop lar Mechanics
way back in the late 70's. I would still like to build a V8 powered bus with this
conversion. Think I'll use a Land Rover V-8. All aluminum block and plenty of sources.
Might even try to put in a VW TDI engine. Plenty of torque. Good Luck wi h your new toy.

Great site!! I have owned three type 2 volkswagens. My last two were Pop-top campers. The
"ORANGE" had a blown engine when I bought it, as did all the VW's i have owned.
I had never heard of alternative motors for vans. I decided to install a FORD 2.3lt cyl
with the radiator inside the engine compartment(stock looking). It ran like a charm but the
stock intake and carb did not allow room for an air cleaner, minor problem. I put 30 miles
on the engine and 30 gallons of water on the radiator to cool it dow in 10 roadside stops
(BIG PROBLEM). Then added a secound cooling unit flat under the floor and added two more
electric fans, still overheated. While looking for parts I found my latest curse A 1976
green camper with all origional interior, 36000 origiona miles, kept in a garage by an old
lady << NO SHIT>> 1200 dollars. Did i forget to mention the engine fire that disabled it? Well
three days later with new webbers I was camping . Three weeks later I was walking. Dropped
valve, lost engine. Now I am back o the ford idea and a minor lift for taller tires. I've
got good info on this cheep swap, now that I got the radiator problem tastifully fixed, and
local lines on many cheap bus parts. Any one interested please e-mail me. I will try to
send some photos of he 2.3 swap soon. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kewl Site!!!! Looking for more power for my dad's 82 Vanagon. You have hit the nail on the
head. Dad's winter car is a Ford Tempo with a 3L V6, and that is more like the motor VW
should have been using in a van as heavy as a Vanagon. The woods around here are too rough
for a VW, but I bet yours is a blast... but doesn't the extra height make it tippy
side-to-side?

Steve, MOST impressed with what you have done!! Where do you live? No hint. . I have an 82
Transporter (Auto, aircooled). I have read about a few conversions over the years, but
wasn't sure how they would be accepted by authorities in Australia. I'd be interested in
hearing your comments. I understand some of the Subaru engines it well into a VW (with
work orf course). I suspect the vertical depth of the engine bay in our vehicle would
prevent the sort of engine you have used from going in. The Subaru engines are flatter.
Any comments? (I had by engine rebuilt at about 160,000. I had had it since 84 and did
about 100,000 in it, very happily. Obviously we don't use it a LOT. It too is a camper - a
Trakka -.) Regards from Brisbane. David Yates
