Fog Lights

The stock fog lights were equipped with wimpy 27W bulbs.  Why GM decided to do this, I don't know.  Maybe there's some odd law about total wattage on a factory car.   Who knows.  Anyways, from playing with my last car, I know that often different automotive bulbs will fit the same socket.  I went down to the local AutoZone and looked through their racks.  And sure enough, there was a 50W bulb that had the same socket design as the 27W factory bulb.

No pics of the new lights yet.

The Factory bulb is part# 880 and is 27W.  The 50W replacement is Part# 885.   These Bulbs come with gaskets to seal them to the reflector.  The 885 gasket is too big, you need to swap it with the stock gaskets. (this took me 30min and a couple ounces of flesh to figure out.)  I'm not a small person at 6'4" and 230lbs, so most people should be able to reach down into the bumper from the top.  For 98 Formula owners, I think yu can reach these bulbs from the bottom.  These bulbs should fit all 93-98 TransAms, and most likely all 98 Firebirds.

Daytime Running Lights (DRLs)

The 98 firebirds come with Daytime Running Lights which are basically their turnsignals on "bright" mode while the headlights are off.  They do remain on when the light switch is in the "parking light" position, so I haven't disabled them, liking how they look along side the foglights.  The lenses and reflectors of the turnsignals, in the TransAm and Formula, are clear.  The only yellow in this setup is in the bulb itself.  Again, knowing that different bulbs may fit the same socket, I figured that I could find the clear equivalent and replace the yellow bulbs, basically making cheap "Clear Corners".

As you can see it, they make a marked improvement.  ANother person has done this with their formula, so it is the same for those cars as well.  To reach these bulbs you need to unscrew two screws under the front bumper and you can flip up an access panel to reach where these bulbs are secured into the reflectors.  Unfortunately I don't know the partnumbers off-hand, I'll put them in when I get the time to go ut and look. ;)
