The Windstar Gal's Windstar Experience
I am slowly coming down off the new-car-owner high that I have been on since we bought the Windstar. It is the first time we have had a nice BRAND NEW car and I love it! The first week we got it we just couldn't stay in the house at night. We'd think of some lame excuse like "I need some gum from that convenience store 15 miles away in North Van...right now!" and off we'd go driving, driving.
We actually went cruising, just like in high school! Or, actually, junior high school.
Anyway,. when the (now) Windstar Guy began talking about buying a car, I wasn't too alarmed. But when he started to talk about new cars, I thought, whoa. I better get involved before he spends his money foolishly. After a while, leasing was the favourite option. But I was actually able to point out that it was going to be more expensive to lease than to buy 'cause that lease down payment doesn't come back at ya. I was proud of that contribution to common sense (we call it knockin' on the door and asking for Ronnie Real).
I couldn't believe myself, really; here I was devoting potential reading, gardening and socializing time to car buying research. But I feel I was able to contribute (which was hard to begin with because The Windstar Guy is a real car afficionado, although he denies it categorically, and it is intimidating to car shop with an expert) because when confronted with a vehicle in person, it was really easy for me to say, no, or, yes, or over my dead body; whereas the Windstar Guy seemed to have a more flexible attitude which just became confusing. Sort of like when I shop for clothes. So I actually began to enjoy the experience! Me! I was actually developing a relationship with our (soon-to-be) car. This was a first.
So we bought the brand new Windstar because it was the best deal going. That was the first reason.
The next important reason for me to buy a van when there are just 2 of us, is that I like to be up high, driving in Vancouver, and vans are much higher than cars. I find the height a real advantage driving in the traffic in Vancouver which is horrible and full of drivers with poop for brains. I can see at those awful intersections, and merge into traffic situations. We also bought a white van because I believe, from my experience of cars I see, that white makes your car really visible here. Grey and silver blend right into the rain. White would not be so good in Regina, I'm guessing. A lot of my considerations were to do with feeling safe.
I think the engine is fabulous because they have marked parts you might have to deal with, oil, wiper fluid, etc.; clearly in yellow. So you can find them by yourself! It is a really comfortable car. We have been driving all over the province, and it is great! Quiet and roomy. Pretty fair cup holders. Air conditioning! Actually it feels so luxurious to me that I felt sort of guilty..uneasy..at first - a reconditioned catholic Windstar Gal reaction if I ever heard one! And you can imagine my liberal socialist boomer guilt about how much I'm enjoying this material possesion! Am I the same person who cut out newspaper clippings for the fledgling recylcing center in the 60's wearing tie-dyed skirts?
I don't know about where you live, but in Vancouver in the summer you have to drive hours ( and/or spend hours in a ferry lineup) to get away from it all - and a couple of times this year we took off on Friday night and drove 5 hours (arriving at 12:30AM) to Penticton - just for the weekend. And in the Windstar it was even fun!
