2000 Montreal
Canada Formula One Grand Prix
69 laps; 305.049 kms distance; June 18, 2000. Round 8.
Weather - clear to start with steadily increasing rain.
Another formation finish for Ferrari, with Michael Schumacher
streaking away to lead the race all the way to his 40th career win. His lead was
dominating, only David Coulthard was able to keep up with the
German during the early stages of the race.
BAR's Jacques Villeneuve had a blindingly fast start in
front of his home crowd, jumping two places from his grid position into third spot.
His BAR held up Barrichello's
Ferrari and Hakkinen's McLaren who
watched the leading two cars slip away. Villeneuve was too eager by far to score
points in this race and ended up crashing out (taking Ralf
Schumacher with him) with some incredibly late braking into a corner on lap 65.
Coulthard's race was penalised severely with a ten second stop/go for having
mechanics on the track right up to the start of the warm up lap. This left Michael
Schumacher peerless on the track, with a twenty six and a half second lead over second
placed Barrichello by lap 26.
Rain started falling just after the leading drivers had made their scheduled pitstop,
meaning that they had to come in a second time for wet tyres. Hakkinen was
particularly affected by this, making two stops in two laps!
Giancarlo Fisichella's Benetton has his pit stop timed
perfectly, only needing one stop for both fuel and wet tyres, which leap frogged him into
third place behind the two Ferrari.
And of course, rain only benefitted the Rain Master, Michael Schumacher, who had the
luxury of easing back from his 30 second lead by lap 49 to make it another pictureque
Ferrari 1-2, with Barrichello just a half car distance behind over the finish line.
On a circuit notorious on brakes, the rain benefited some, with 16 finishers.
This was McLaren's 500th F1 Grand Prix, one that was not memorable for them.
Schumacher extends his Driver's Championship lead to 56
points, with nearest rival Coulthard on 34 points. Ferrari leads the Constructor's table with 84 points over McLaren's 66 points.
