A race lost in the pits for Michael
Schumacher, with two disastrous stops - the first when the lollipop man raised too early,
sending Michael on his way before the refueller had disengaged (badly injuring the
refueller) - the second stop when the replacement refueller took ten seconds longer to
engage the fuel hose.
That said though, it was a derserving one-two win for McLaren Mercedes' Mika Hakkinen
and teammate David Coulthard in their first win of the 2000 season. Mika was never
far behind Schumacher and took full advantage of the German's misfortune. This is
Mika's 15th career win.
Schumacher showed his famous arrogance later in the race - after coming out of the
second pitstop he was suffering with a slow tyre leak and losing a couple of seconds per
lap. Schumacher's teammate Rubens Barrichello was challenging the Williams of
Schumacher's brother Ralf for 4th position and these two were catching Michael quickly.
Michael unashamedly hindered Ralf as the Williams overtook Michael, allowing
Barrichello a clear passage ahead of Ralf.
No brotherly love where Formula 1 is concerned.
Only two drivers have opted for the harder compound Bridgestone tyres for this race -
M.Schumacher and Vertsappen.
This was also a fantastic race for second placed David Coulthard. Earlier in
the week, the Lear jet in which he was travelling crashed, killing the two pilots.
David's fiancee and personal trainer also survived the crash. David raced here with
a cracked rib, but was otherwise OK.
Our deepest sympathy goes to the families of both pilots of the Lear.
Rumours - 1/. Toyota have approached Damon
Hill to head their entry into F1.
Rumours - 2/. Peugot may buy into the Prost team.
Rumours - 3/. Renault have bought the Benetton team.
