Ferrari's revival It has now been over 10 long years since McLaren's Ayrton Senna deliberately ran Alan Prost's Ferrari off the circuit at Suzuka in 1991, ending Ferrari's lead in the Championship in the final race of the season. After the controversial loss in 1991 and the sacking of Alain Prost, Niki Lauda returned to the team as an adviser. The Tifosi didn't celebrate a GP win until the German Grand Prix of 1994 and again until the Canadian Grand Prix of 1995. The World Champion of 1994 & 1995, Michael Schumacher, was lured to Ferrari in 1996 in an all-out assault on the Constructor's Championship. Schumacher helped the team finish a credible third behind an all-conquering Williams team in his first year with the team after their long hiatus (he won the Grand Prix of Spain, Belgium and Italy). The 1997 season came down to the result of the final race in Jerez, between Schumacher's Ferrari and the Williams-Renault of Jacques Villeneuve. Schumacher attempted to take out Villeneuve, crashed and was subsequently stripped of his championship points, after leading for most of the season. Schumacher steered his Ferrari to victories at the 1998 Argentina, Canada, France, Hungary and Italy Grand Prix. The Italian GP was particularly sweet for the Tifosi, being treated to a 1-2 finish with Schumacher's team-mate Eddie Irvine finishing second. McLaren-Mercedes won the Constructor's Championship with their top driver Mika Hakkinen claiming the Driver's Championship of 1998. 1999 was Ferrari's year, World Champions again with 128 points and 6 wins for Michael Schumacher and teammate Eddie Irvine (Mika Salo was test driver) 2000 World Champions, 170 points, 10 wins for Michael Schumacher and teammate Rubens Barrichello scoring his first GP win. Michael won the first Driver's Championship for Ferrari in 21 years. 2001 World Champions with 179 points & nine wins, all Schumacher. The team of Schumacher & Barrichello also scored 10 second places, 5 third places, 1 x fourth, and 3 fifth places on their way to a record breaking year. |
