The 911 is the most distinguished porsche and recignizable model, it is also the most like the original, there is a lot of history behind this modle as well as the company. If you want the history there is a summary of it below, and a link to a very extensive history done by another person.
This model (the 996 generation) is a huge change from anything ever done in a 911. The biggest change is that the engine is now WATER cooled, something that has never been done in the 911. The other change is that it no longer has a displacement of 3.6 liters, it has gone down to 3.4 but the power output has gone up. It now has a horsepower rating of 296 compared to the old that had 270, this engine is very effiecent. One thing that hasn't changed is that it is still a flat design, meaning that it is basically a 180 degree V6. If you still are having a hard time understanding what that means then read on; The flat design means that the cylinders are facing the opposite direction from each other with three in each cylinder bank. Whereas a V design engine would have them at an angle apart, the most common are 60 and 90 degrees offset. The flat comes from the fact that the cylinders are laying flat on their sides.
Power Output - hp = 296 torque = 258 lb/ft
Power Output - hp = 270, tourque = 243 lb-ft Acceleration - 0-60= 5.3, Qtr mile= 13.8@102mph
Power Output - hp = 282, tourque = 250 lb-ft acceleration - 0-60 =5.0, qtr. mile = 13.5@103
power output - hp = 400, tourque = 400 lb-ft acceleration - 0-60 = 3.7, qtr. mile = 12.3@114.1
I haven't gotten up this info. yet because I am in the middle of redoing some of the configuration of this site, so till I get it done, here is a pic for you to drool over...
On March 27th of 1998 Ferdinand Porsche died at an age of nearly 90 years. 1998 marks the 50th aniversary of the company, he sarted with lightweight aluminum bodied, rear engined car called the 356 powered by a Volkswagon engine with 40hp. The next thing to come from the company was the 911, now almost 35 years old, it is considered the ultimate Porsche, spare the 959 which had a production run of only about 200. He also made the worlds first limited slip differential, this was how he solved the problem of traction for his race cars, which were highly competitive against their rivals, Mercedes-Benz. He recieved an honorary doctorate by the Vienna Technical Institute in 1965, and recieved the title "Professor" in 1984 by state decree. Now with the new Boxter, and the '98 996 (which is the new generation of the 911, it will be the '99 for us over here in North America) the company is still running strong in the performance gnere of automobiles, but now without the man that started it all for the company, but he will still be remembered and loved by many. A great man has passed on, but his legend will live on indefinetly.
