How to Assemble ABS and PVC Fittings and Pipe
I have created this page for all you who have no clue how to assemble the pipe used in guns. Just follow these step-by-step instructions and you should be all set.
For both PVC and ABS
- Try to cut the pipe with a hacksaw in a straight line. The straighter it is, the longer the joint, so it holds better.
- Deburr the edges of the pipe with your finger or snadpaper to remove the burrs left from cutting.
- Sand the gluing surfaces of the pipe and fittings with sandpaper or emery cloth (this is optional, I do so the glue will hold onto the pipe and fittings better).
For PVC Only
- After sanding, use the dauber in the can of cleaner or purple primer to clean the gluing surfaces of both the pipe and fittings.
- Then spread a PVC glue (never use ABS glue!) throughout the fitting and on the pipe doing it fairly quickly to keep it a liquid.
- Put the pieces together using a 1/4 turn twisting motion until the pipe bottoms in the fitting.
- Hold assembly together for 30 seconds or so unitl the pipe stays in fitting (if not held, the pipe would back itself off).
- Clean leftover glue from joint that came out during assembly.
For ABS only
- ABS doesn't need to be primed, so make sure it's been cleaned.
- Spread glue (Remember to use an ABS glue!) throughout the fitting and on the pipe doing it quickly to keep it a liquid.
- Put the pieces together using a 1/4 turn twisting motion until the pipe bottoms in the fitting.
- Hold assembly together for 30 seconds or so unitl the pipe stays in fitting.
- Clean leftover glue from joint that came out during assembly.
You can use a multi-purpose cement made for PVC and ABS to save money instead of having to buy two different cans. For even better looking pipe ends, sand them with a belt sander. (I'm not a plumber, so if you know the right way to do anything, good for you.)
