You can tour around the Kuring-gai Chase National Park, where they have the Geebung growing. The secret SEX life of the Geebung ..... nestled in the leafy suburbs of Sydney's north shore lies what is now considered to be Australia's most bizarre and rarest plant, one that has scientists baffled. For not only are there very few of them left, it is the only known plant that refuses to reveal the secrets of its sex life. With copper-coloured hairlike strands covering its leaves, bright yellow flowers and purple plum like seeds, it is a distinctive as it is mysterious. Despite many attempts to propagate this species of the Geebung family, scientists are at a loss to explain how the Personia mollis (meaning soft) germinates, reproduces or even grows. "It is bizarre says Chris Lacey a National Parks and Wildlife Service Threatened Species Officer. "It it is also the most distinct species of its kind. Most plants can be propagated and there have been people doing experiments on Personia but so far no one has had any real success or been able to do it at all. "They are growing in the wild but we don't know how." The Geebung - the common name for the genus - is only found in one place in the world, along the creek line in Berowra. It was only discovered six years ago. A specila scientific team, inluding geneticists is preparing a recovery plan to protect the only remaining individula of this clan which has now been declared nationally endangered. Personia mollis: Common name Geebung. only found in a 6km are at Berowra, grows up to 6 metres tall, yellow flowers, purple plums and hairy leaves, listed as endangered in 1996, first identified in 1991.
