February Rendezvous

On Tuesday February 12th we had had our newest and youngest addition to the rendezvous, one month old Samantha Harper arriving with her parents Kevin and Barrie Harper in Barries Alfa Romeo 164. Kevin reported on his refurbishing his GTV6, their Alfa Romeo 105 series spyder, and their Lancia. On April 12th they will head up to the annual wine tour in Charlottesville. Kevin Harper spoke on the Driver Education Program at Roebling Road Raceway March 2&3. Check your Alfa Advocate for the official entry form. The cost is $225 and the entry includes the event T shirt, the Friday night social at the hotel and the Saturday evening dinner. John Parker who first made his Alfa spyder known last month is busy rebuilding it at the moment. John like Kevin is well versed in mechanics.

Alfa Romeo Extravaganza

Thor Mirchandani is coordinating our trip to the Alfa Romeo Extravaganza in Raleigh on May 25th. We will start in Winston Salem and then stop in Greensboro and Mebane along the way. At this point we have the following going: And currently without Alfas but looking Richard Hipwood and John Hauser. For more information call John Hauser at 336 631 8760. On or about June 15th we hope to run the Corsa Rossa Miglia as either a time speed distance rally or a tour. John Hauser and Jack O'Brien have a two hour drive that has “seventy miles of the best roads you could ask to drive on and several more miles that are exceptional.We hope this will be our opportunity to host our own Mid Atlantic Alfa Romeo driving event.

MAARC Meeting In Raleigh

For anyone interested. We are planning a run up to the MAARC meeting in Raleigh to talk Alfas on Wednesday. As mentioned on Tuesday its a 1.5 hour sprint and Jack and I will be leaving at 5pm for the 7pm rendezvous at Daniels in Carey. If you want to tag along meet at my house in Winston at 5pm.

Appalcahian Moonshine Run

Jon Saylor and the Triad Austin Healey Club is organizing the Appalachian Moonshine Run time speed distance rally again this year. Last year there were 55 cars to start and finish. This April Jon is expecting between 75 and 100 cars. the Deep River Pipes and Drums will play in the morning and Main street will be cordoned off for the rally cars to park on display prior to the 1pm start. The awards will go to the drivers and navigators of the first 7 cars as well as the drivers and navigators of the first place team. Teams will be made up of three cars which register as a team and whose combined average score has the least penalty points as compared to the other teams. Teams do not have to be made up of the same marque. For more information call Jon Saylor at 336 788 7291.

The Appalachian Moonshine Run tsd rally is in its final planning stages. this rally has two scenic check points, a five mile stretch up a mountain, meandering trout streams, 5 one lane bridges, and beautiful roads and scenery. Allen Hendrix of Hendrix Wire Wheel, Steve Barney of Sport Auto, and Larry Jarvis of Jarvis Battery are sponsoring the awards for the April 13th tsd rally.

MAARC Wine Tour

Please note the MAARC annual wine tour is not on the same weekend as the Appalachain Moonshine Run TSD as recently and inaccurately believed. The actual weekent is April 19th. Call Dave Morris or Skip Patnode for more details. Two years ago we had 5 corsa rossa cars to caravan up from Winston Salem.

Attached is the wine tour information. Currently Bill and Janice Criag in a spyder, John and Kaye Parker in a spyder, Kevin and Barrie Harper in a GTV6 and Carol and I in a Healey are booked to attend the April 19-21 weekend in Charlottesville.

Corsa Rossa’s European Car Festival 2002

The October 12th festival at Reynolda is being planned. All thoughts and suggestions are welcomed. At the rendezvous we had a discussion regarding the music, the awards, the possibility of arranging tours at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts and Old Salem. The interest in Austin Healey as the featured marque during its 50th anniversary has been tremendous. We may have a record number of cars on the lawn at Reynolda House. Von Paterson is sponsoring the group Gaelwynd which performs traditional music of the British Isles. Von who has prepared cars for concours events such as Amelia Island as well as for driving events such as the Carrea Pan Americana is promoting the 5oth Austin Healey celebration at Corsa Rossa at Reynolda and believes it is conceivable to see as many as 200 Austin Healeys. The Brookstown Inn has reserved a block of rooms for Saturday October 12th in the name of Corsa Rossa at Reynolda at special rates.

This year the festival will take place on Saturday October 12th 2002 10am-5pm. In attendance will be cars from all over Europe including Ferraris, Maseratis and Lancias of Italy to BMW, Porsche and Mercedes of Germany, to Aston Martin, MG and Lotus of Britain to Saab and Volvo of Sweden as well as many other marques. There will be both competition and road cars on display.

Registration will begin at 10am and end at 12 noon. This years honored marque, Austin Healey will be on display on the lawn at Reynolda House with the other marques on display in Reynolda Village and Gardens. All European cars are invited to participate. Cars are to be parked according to their manufacturer. There are twenty manufacturer classes and those cars not fitting into one of these twenty classes will be placed in the special interest or competition classes. Additional classes may be added prior to the show depending on preregistration.

Registration is $10 per car. All proceeds go to the Childrens Art Fund at Reynolda . A dash plaque will be given to each registered car. Awards will be presented to a car in each marque with 5 cars preregistered. The will be a special event price for Admission to Reynolda House Museum of American Art.

Directions:

The festival offers a unique, beautiful and historic setting at Reynolda House Museum of American Art, Reynolda Gardens and Reynolda Village. Live music will be performed in Reynolda Village. The Village houses the former support buildings and dairy for the Estate. The village offers restaurants such as the Blackhorse Cafe, Reynolda Village Soda Shop, the Village Tavern and the Vineyards, all with outdoor seating. The shops contain everything from clothes, sportswear, antiques, books, music, toys, gourmet cookware and fine foods to jewelry and much more.
