On Saturday, April 12th after a week of snow and rain storms we had a beautiful day with 72 cars to start and finish the 3rd annual time speed distance rally. The rally covered 81 miles and required 7329 seconds to achieve a perfect score. Two penalty points were given for every second fast and one penalty point for every second slow. The cars varied from a 1955 375 Ferrari America competition car to a 1988 Ferrari Testarossa; a 1952 MG YB, 1956 MG Magnette to a 1994 Morgan Plus 8; vintage BMW 2002s to the new BMW 23, Z4 and Z8 roadsters; a 1955 Jaguar XK140 Coupe to XKEs through the current models; a 1966 Porsche 912 through the current Porsche Boxster; two new Nissan 2350s accompanied a vintage Datsun 310. First place went to Mike Vincoli and Kyle Ulshafer in a red Jaguar XKE roaster with 98 penalty points. Second place went to Matthew and Abby Freed in a beige MGB-GT with 128 penalty points. Matthew Freed won in 2002 and won the second leg in 2001. His father, Eric Freed came in second last year in an XKE Coupe. This year the winner’s son Mike, Jr. and his navigator finished 7th in a Healey 3000. The Patnodes and Kissingers traveled eight hours to attend the rally in their Alfa Romeo Spyders from the Chesapeake Bay.
We had five cars from the Mid Atlantic Afa Romeo Club to compete including a 164 Sedan and four Spiders. Doug Tolbert and Larry Lilly drove in an XKE Coupe from Hinton, West Virginia. There was a Jensen Intercepter and two Austin Healey 100-4s with Wisconsin plates at the start which did not compete. Charly Braun and Hans Zirpins from Hamburg and Eschborn, Germany represented the Germany Austin Healey Club in a 1969 MG Midget. They finished well with 612 penatly points.
The Catawba Valley British Motor Club had 12 teams to compete. The Porsche Club, the Jaguar club of the Carolinas, BMW 02 Group, the Mid Atlantic Alfa Romeo Club, the Austin Healey Club of the Carolinas, the NC MG Car Club, the Piedmont British Motor Club, the Nissan 2 Club, the Ferrari Club and the Triumph club of the Carolinas were all represented.
A special thanks goes out to Jerry and Carolyn Anderson for Carrott Cake, Blackberry, Cherry and Apple pies at the finish, to Mark Flynt and Alan Hendrix for managing the check point, Mike and John Bro at registration, the City of Elkin and the Police Department for hosting the start on Main Street. A most hearty congratulations goes out to Jon Saylor for organizing and setting up this spectacular rally. We hope to see everyone again next April in Elkin.
The next rally will be at Bristish Car Days South on Saturday, June 7th and will consist of a five stage time speed distance rally and the rally after that will be the Corsa Rossa Mini Miglia in October. For more information on these rallys call Jack O’Brien at 336-724-1417.

Whatever you do, don't miss the June 10th meeting! Steve Barney of Sport Auto, a name synonymous with Lamborghini and Ferrari in the Piedmont Triad and environs, will give a talk at the meeting. The topics include Mr. Barney's Mille Miglia competition drive and "Bella Macchina - The Art of Ferrari".
Mr. Barney was for a long the premier authorized Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Porsche dealer in the Triad, and is now running an exclusive Lamborghini dealership in Summerfield, NC. He is also a former Senior Ferrari Concourse Judge, and lived and worked in Italy during the "Golden Era" of the Italian GT cars. Mr. Barney has always been a strong and faithful Corsa Rossa supporter and we're tickled pink - no, make that "tickled racing red" - to once again have him back as our featured speaker. Should be a memorable evening.

On the weekend of May 3rd and 4th, Virginia International Raceway will be packed with your favorite Italians. The Mid Atlantic Alfa Romeo Club (MAARC) will have their annual VIR Driving School on the Southern course. And on the Northern course there is a Ferrari track event.

As always Dave and Debbie Morris had selected excellent wineries, and served a wonderful meal at their mountaintop home. There were 19 Alfa Romeos this year, including 1 GTV, 4 GTV-6, 2 Duettos and a bevy of 164s and Spyders. Thanks also go out to International Autoparts who served a breakfast in their facilities on Saturday morning.
