Honda Australia has never imported the Africa Twin to Australia even though it would seem to be the ideal bike for our country. When asked about this
Honda Australia cites the sales of both XLV 750's and Transalp's which did not sell very well here and were both discontinued after 2 years. There are approximately
10 Africa Twins in Australia, all are private imports brought into the country after Aussies have owned them overseas and brought them home or occasionally an overseas traveller
will bring an Africa Twin to Australia for a holiday and sell the bike before returning home.
Here are a few examples of the Africa Twin in Australia
My RDO4 Africa twin was purchased by an Aussie in England,
, and ridden overland back to Australia. Justin then had the bike tested and registered in Australia as a private import. I bought the bike in october 97 and
its a wonderful machine.
Glenn Turner's 650 Africa Twin was brought into the country by a Japanese competitor in the 1990 Australian Safari,
an Australian competitor, Glen Middleton, he harassed the Africa Twin owner all the way from Sydney to Darwin until he finally agreed to sell it to him at the end of the safari.
After Glen Middleton passed away Glenn Turner purchased it and has been riding it for a few years.
Michael Richards acquired his RDO7 from an Irish tourist, he saw the Africa Twin riding through Sydney and chased it until he got the rider to pull over.
Michael talked the Irishman into selling him the bike rather than taking it home. Michael is in the process of putting the bike through Australian Design Rule
testing which after completion will allow him to import and sell 25 a year.
