Brief History of the Cowdery Family

The Cowdery name comes from the Norman French word coudre which means a hazel copse or grove. The coudre family, or whatever exactly they were called, came over with William the Conqurer in 1066. The family settled in the south of England. Famous members of the family include Lord Cowdray who has a large estate near Midhurst in Hampshire. Mormon Elder Oliver Cowdery gained a well-known reputation during lifetime for being one of the three primary witnesses asserting a divine origin for the Book of Mormon. He was also an important leader in the earliest days of Mormonism. More recently an important couple were Frederick and Bertha Cowdery who had many children who quarelled for most of last century. I was lucky to meet most of these children at one time or another. I hope you enjoy looking through my findings. If you have any findings/corrections please let me know.
