| Ray Evernham has established himself as arguably the best crew chief in the NASCAR Winston Cup
Series. But now he has a new challenge: staying on top with two-time series champion Jeff Gordon. He led Gordon to a second series title in 1997, on the the heels of a 10-win 1996 season. Evernham has guided the No. 24 car to the Busch Pole Award, having won five poles in 1996. It was not the first distinction for the crew. Together they won the World Pit Crew Championships in 1994. Evernham, who was born on Aug. 26, 1957 in Red Bank, N.J., began his career as a crew chief on the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division with owner Bill Davis and Gordon in 1991. He joined Hendrick Motorsports in 1992 after working as a chassis specialist for Alan Kulwicki's NASCAR Winston Cup Series team. He has been involved in motorsports for more than 20 years. He built and drove Modified Division cars from 1979 through 1983 and again in 1991. A former NASCAR Winston Cup Series Crew Chief of the Year, Evernham and wife Mary have a son, Ray. |
