A PROFILE OF NEEDE

The municipality of Neede, which occupies an area of 4599 hectares, has about 11,000 inhabitants, most of whom live in Neede itself. The smaller villages of Rietmolen and Noordijk, and the little hamlet of Lochuizen lie within the municipal boundaries. Neede lies within what's known as "Region Twente".

rural
The countryside around Neede is typically rural and varied: country paths and lanes which wind their way along and through fields and meadows: streams and rivulets: woodlands and heath. Bird-breeding territories can be found throughout the region, notably those of the little owl, the golden oriole and the nightingale.

farming and textile
Neede was originally a farming community. Gradually the farmers began turning their hand to weaving. The foundation was thus laid for a flourishing textile industry, which fell into decline in the sixties. Nowadays the main industries are building, timber, metal, synthetic fibres, packaging and the food industry. The National Market of Jams and Marmalades, which takes place in Neede every year in the summertime, still remembers the famous Jam-factory of Neede "Tuinbouw Maatschappij Gelderland" from the beginning of this century.
