Delheim Wines | Stellenbosch |
A really enjoyable place to visit with one of the best tours available.
Up in the hills with magnificent views, you can eat lunch in the open air,
taste wines in the cellar, buy souvenirs and splash through grape juice while
taking the tour. How long till the safety inspectors stop it I don't know,
but to walk through a working winery at vintage time, stepping over pipes and
walking through spilled grapes was a real thrill for me. While high tech, I
noticed the back labels on wines destined for the UK were being stuck on by hand by
a group of four workers. The winery makes a large range of wines and pinotage
is a minor part. The bulk of the 97 vintage was lost through the fungus that affected
over 30% of northern Stellenbosch.
Delheim Pinotage is all exported.

2001 - Dark purple, very soft warm mouth fill, absolutely delicious. 13.5% alc (PFM 10/02)
2000 - Lovely black red colour, sweet fruits, good acids a wonderfully enjoyable wine. (PFM 02/02) 1997 - Very forward nose, bright flavours with that old Pinotage acetone taste prevalent. (PFM 02/02) 1995 The fruit and depth of Grenache, with the complexity of Pinot Noir, combined with the bubblegum sweetness of Beaujolais. A enjoyably satisfying drink. Heavy sediment. (PFM 02/98) 1990 - A light wine, sweet fruit, very enjoyable, but if you have any, drink up soon. (PFM 02/02) 1987 - Colour browning, some good fruit, but light and fading in the glass. (PFM 02/02) 1981 - The first vintage from the Vera Cruz estate. Beautiful fresh young bouquet, sweet clean fruit, wonderful and perfect. (PFM 02/02) 1975 - Made from vines planted by Spatz 15 years previously, sourced from Bellevue (the vineyard that produced grapes used in the first Pinotage, sold under the Lanzerac label) , this was a pale brown colour with a light sweet flavour of boiled sweets, thinning and now sadly past its best (PFM 02/02) |

2001 tank sample - dark red/purple, spicy warm with medium aftertaste. This sample hadn't seen wood but it will go into wood maturation before bottling. (tasted May 2001 at IWSC by PFM)
Devon View | Stellenbosch |
New small winery who intend to produce premium pinotage.
2000 - Plum mouthfill with tannigs providing some astringency. Definite aging potential. Has spent 15 months in 70% new oak. (tasted May 2001 at IWSC by PFM)
Wine magazine said "Pinotage in the modern style. Dense colour, complex aromas of creamy, plummy fruit and sweet, jammy fruit flavours with distinct banana coming through. Firmly wooded, soft but lasting tannins. Lively at the first taste, then softens. Good drinking now but two to four years will see it reach its peak." (1997 vintage reviewed in May 1998 Wine Magazine) tasting reports welcomed
Diamant | Paarl |
This tiny winery is next door to Fairview. Farmer Niel Malans makes a very small amount of wine in the old way from the bush vines on the slope below his farm. Low open concrete vats are used for fermentation, the grapes are crushed by foot. The 1995 vintage consisted of seven barriques, the wine only available at the winery and soon sold out. The pinotage crop is sold to Fairview.

Die Krans Estate | Klein Karoo |
Winery concentrating on making 'ports', interesting bottlings of single varietal Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barocca.
200113.5%alc, 40% from 30 year old vineyards, rest from 5 year old vineyards. Unwooded. Limpid red purple colour, with pink rims. Sweet inviting nose, taste of red fruits, some esters and slight alcohol burn, but quite straighforward and uncomplex drinking wine. Good (PFM 05/2002)
Diemensdal Estate | Durbanville |
Friendly estate offering tutored tasting of their wines in super surroundings. Classy black label, and reasonable prices. In UK a small 'letter box' style white label with the vintage on another label coloured according to varietal.
Fresh young tasting pinotage - drunk less than a year after bottling - bright clear high plum tones. Medium aftertaste, clean dry refreshing, oh if only all pinotage tasted at least this good. (1997 Pinotage, tasted Jan 1998)
Diemersfontein | Wellington |
2003 - sealed by screwcap. It has the coffee nose and flavour of the 2002 but less intense and the 2003 Carpe Diem is a softer, warmer more complex version. (pfm10/03)
2002 - Intense coffee nose, young purple colour. Chocolate toffee flavour - I like it, but it's unlike any other. Coffee chocolate liqueur. (PFM 02/2003 tasted blind, and recognised by its coffe shop nose) 2001 Carpe Diem - Almost opaque black red, soft sweet ripe berries, structured tannins, some coffee flavours, refreshing enjoyable fruit acids. Perfect. (PFM 02/2003) 2001 - Dense burgundy in colour, violet tinged quality oak on the nose – clearly some expensive oak treatment but ripe red fruits also comes forward. On the palate though the entry is a blast of acid, very out of place and if added very over-done but then some ripe, licquirice tinged fruit comes through. With time the acid impression seems to get worse and then tends toward volatility. An adventurous style and for me it doesn’t look like paying off. (Nick Alabaster 10/02)

Douglas Green | Unknown |
This is a big brand in South Africa, frequently encountered on restaurant wine lists. Its modern triangular label differentiates it from the boring old-fashioned labels in general use.
Good value drinking wine. I tasted a 25 year old Douglas Green pinotage in 1996. It was thinning, a browny colour on the edge, pronounced sweetish acetone taste. An enjoyable drink all the same, proof that pinotage can last.
Drie River | Western Cape |
No information on label, shop owner said it was cash and carry own label wine. Code A100 shows it is a KWV wine
Dry, thin fruit, good colour starting to brown around the edges. Good with food. Vintage 1994 tasted Jan 98
Drostdy Hof | Tulbagh |
Mature wine, at 8 years not obviously Pinotage, subdued fruit, balanced, elegant. Ideal with food, but unlikely to improve. (1991 tasted August 1999)

2001 - Inky purple red, spicy upfront flavours, warm sweet and satisfying (PFM 10/02)
Durbanville Hills | Durbanville |
2000 - Sweet fruit nose and sweet mulberry flavours in this delightful soft approachable wine made from dry farmed low yielding vines aged in new and 2nd fill oak casks. Good 14% alc (PFM 10/02)
Du Toitskloof | Worcester |
Four families with nine farms own this co-operative producing some 10,000 tonnes of grapes.
2000 - Light fruity quaffing wine with long aftertaste. Similar to Groot Eiland which it neighbours and shares same soil. (tasted May 2001 at IWSC by PFM)
'This is a very happy find! A Pinotage in my view where the winemaker has achieved
"new South African wine" status with a PINOTAGE. Well done Phillip Jordaan!
We found strong fruit, good earthy/woody flavour but wrapped in a wonderful round (soft?) on the palette taste sensation. Wow!' (Malcolm Basford - 1998 vintage tasted July 99)
