2001 - Bright red colour with purple rim, wood smoke nose, plum fruits and cigar box flavours. Some hard tannins which are softened somewhat by food while remaining a powerful distinctive and individualistic wine. Makes a good match with Indian food. (PFM 07/03)

Hannu Lehmusvuori picked the 1995 Goue Vallei as his wine of the week in March 1998. The first pinotage and only the second South African wine to be so honoured. He says "A wine hitting your nose with strength. Among the body a hint of sweet liquorice. Medium bodied, spicy, and interestingly acidy. It's tasty already at the front of your mouth, and stays conquering your palate with stings. Gooseberries, wet grass and peppers. - Pinotage is interesting!"

Cap Classique Pinotage - Worlds first sparkling Pinotage, made by methode champenoise - Beautiful tolook at when poured, wonderful black red colour. Mouth rush of fruit of forest on first taste, bright light taste.
Old Road 2002 - Quite dry on front palate but opens out to reveal nice plummy fruits. (PFM 12/04) 2000 - retasting it again a year later I find ' Red, purple colour, fruit and oak nose. Prominent cherry flavours underlayed by toasted coffee and dark chocolate. Soft on the front palate with sweet fruit, but has depth and tannins and a tangy uplift that just demands another glass. Long lasting aftertaste. Perfect drinking with food now, but I'd like to see it in five years time. Punching far above its price. 13% alc ' (PFM 07/03) 2000 - I felt guilty drinking this wine so young, its deep punted bottle is an invitation to keep for maturing. But it is so enjoyable and fresh, black forest fruits, tobacoo leaf and chocolate. I must buy some more to mature but its delightful now (3/2002 PFM) 1999 Old Road - 1600 cases made from Somerset West fruit. Bright colour, fruity plum taste with a medium aftertaste. Enjoyable wine. (tasted May 2001 IWSC by PFM) 1998 - Wonderful elegant fruity pinotage, silky with just the right acidity (tasted Jan 2001)

Grangehurst 1997
Appearance: plum, purple edges, clear Nose: rasberries, bananas, forthcoming, no off odours Palate: bananas, strawberries, good aftertaste. good balance and structure Conclusion: follows through from nose to palate. fruit/acid/tannins in good balance. complex wine. ready to drink but will keep and improve. an excellant wine - buy it (J Mort 3/2000) Tom Cannavan of wine-pages.com tasted the 1997 and says "Very aromatic. Fragrant bouquet of pastille fruit, vivid blueberry and blackcurrant. Ripe and fruit-driven, yet with a peppery, herbal edge. On the palate typical medicinal, cough-sweet notes are present, but sweet black fruit powers through. Some tannins in a long and very concentrated finish. Very good." (1997 tasted June 1999) Owner/winemaker Jeremy Walker presented a tasting of his 1994 pinotage and Jane Mort was there for The Pinotage Club. "On the nose there is slight acetone. There is also vanilla, mushrooms and a forest floor smell. All this follows through onto the palate. There is a good balance with the fruit/acid/tannin. It spent +/- 12 months in oak. 65% of the oak was French and 35% of the oak was American. A good wine - worthwhile buying." (1994 - tasted September 1998) Grangehurst, Pinotage, Stellenbosch, 1993: Big in every way, with blackberry, cherry and chocolate aromas and flavors, lots of firm tannins and accents of violets, the wine is fully ready to drink now. Score 88. (Daniel Rogov 7/99)

Groot Constantia | Constantia |
This historic estate has been farmed since 1685. Constantia was once the most famous, most prized sweet wine, a favourite of Napoleon. The estate is a great place to visit, being close to Cape Town, with good views, historic buildings and great wines.
2001
Darker fruit flavours becoming more apparent. Full flavour in mouth but again short on finish. Earthy flavours, with smoke/tar finish. A lively wine with a zing. Three hours after opening this wine developed pronounced southern Rhône flavours becoming reminiscent of a Gigondas and far more complex in nature (Keiran Molloy 12/04)
Member Jane Mort reports
1996 Ruby colour. The nose is forthcoming. There is lots of fruit on the nose. There are mostly berries with some bananas. There is a bit of a farmyard/mushroom. One also finds some wood on the nose. The palate follows through from the nose. There is lots of fruit, mostly berries with some bananas. There is a lingering aftertaste. The tannin/fruit/acid are in good balance. The tannins are a bit hard but will soften in time. It is an excellent wine. It will improve and mature in time. It is definitely a wine to buy and lay down for the future. It has good aging potential. It is a complex wine. The winemaker left Groot Constantia on Friday, before departing he told me the wine was oaked in 300l 3rd fill French oak barrels for 16 months. The alcohol is 12.19, the total acid is 6.0, the residual acid is 1.3, and the pH is 3.86. Groot Constantia also feel that the cool climate ensures that the flavor is more typical of the Pinot Noir parent while the fuller body from the Cinsaut parent is also apparent. The Pinot Noir is noticeably apparent in this wine. (Jane Mort 11/98) 1972 The cork crumbled as the bottle was opened. The colour has dropped out slightly. The fruit is still good. The palate follows on from the nose with a good aftertaste. The fruit, tannins and acid are still in good balance and are well integrated. It is very smooth and altogether well balanced. There is not much sediment at the bottom of the bottle. It is a superb wine. It is showing no sign of being old - the other bottles do not have to be drunk for a long time still." Grove Mill Winemaker's Reserve 'DJP' Pinotage 1989: An exciting wine at the time of release. Super ripe and rich Marlborough fruit given extended aging in new American oak barriques. Dark, blackish red still. Plenty of lifted, fresh fruit with a touch of mint and plenty of Rioja-like American oak overtones. Can be seen as a little cool and greenish now, but still with excellent grip, intensity and freshness. Fruit richness has faded somewhat, but the mouthfeel is still there. Liked by many of the tasters and somewhat of a revelation. 16.5-18.0/20 (15/05/00 Raymond Chan at Regional Wines, NZ) |
