Unwooded, with not a forthcoming bouquet, a rustic palate with a touch of sweetness and a very dry aftertaste - 1996 vintage (Norman Brett) Sweet plum nose, surprisingly tannic dryness. Good food wine (1996 tasted 12/98)
Helderkruin Winery Stellenbosch
Owner Niels du Toit tells me the vineyards altitude and closeness to the sea's cooling breezes allows his pinotage to get very ripe and be harvested four weeks later than vineyards in Stellenbosch  Helderkruin label

Hippo Creek Western Cape
No information about the wine on the back label, only about the name which refers to the hippo's who used to wallow in the marshes alongside the vineyards. While it's a memorable name, one taster said it made her think of the muddy, smelly and scum filled liquid in which hippo's play, and that wasn't the sort of thoughts she would want to link to a wine!
1999

Clear, medium ruby colour. Very forward nose of leathery plum, strawberry and banana. Fourteen percent alcohol and considerable residual sweetness make for a warm and expansive, sweetish entry, with banana and leathery plum flavours fanning out across the palate. Sweetish, but balanced, palate feel. Typical bitter black table grapes chime in on the back of the palate, and linger into the long and tasty finish. (Paul Bulas - 01/2002)

Clear, medium ruby colour. Very forward nose of leathery plum, strawberry and banana. Fourteen percent alcohol and considerable residual sweetness make for a warm and expansive, sweetish entry, with banana and leathery plum flavours fanning out across the palate. Sweetish and almost fat, but balanced, palate feel. Typical bitter black table grapes chime in on the back of the palate, and linger on a long and tasty finish. (Following day -Today, the wine is displaying a lovely bittersweet black chocolate note on the finish. Give a wine a few hours, and it invariably changes, evolves... (Paul Bulas - 06/01)
