Kamsberg Malmesbury
A label of Swartland Winery
Good colour, upfront nose. A granular honeyed texture, long aftertaste. Very drinkable.
Kanonkop Estate Stellenbosch
A great cannon marks the turning into the Kanonkop vineyards. This winery and winemaker Beyers Truter has long championed Pinotage. Beyers is now concentrating on Beyerskloof and handed the reins to Abrie Beeslar. In has come a stainless steel sorting table and a walkway over the open fermenters but otherwise the Kanonkop ship sails majestically on.

2001 - Smoky nose, soft and approachable at first until the palate discovers complex flavours. Long dry finish. (PFM 05/03)
2000 Smooth fruits on nose and front palate, taught tannins and hint of bitterness on aftertaste. This is a wine that will repay keeping 13.5% alc(PFM 02/2003)
2000 - Good complex black/red fruits with that slightly gamey/farmyardy/cheesy edge that is often in pinotage - presumably derived from the similar trait to be found in cinsault (and this was at a complexing level much they way low level brett often works to a wines advantage rather than a more distracting higher level). On the palate the same complex flavours in a nicely ripe, medium bodied and balanced wine. (Nick Alabaster 10/02)
1999

Dense, almost black colour, soft warm approachable, little apparent tannin, very drinkable. (9/01)

1998

Appearance: deep plum, clear
Nose: rasberries, bananas, vanilla, forthcoming
Palate: dry, crisp, rasberries, bananas, vanilla, good aftertaste. good fruit/acid/ balance
Conclusion:good structure. follows through from nose to palate. Too young - better when tannins softer. Leave for at least 10 years. 90% new french oak for 14 months. Buy now and keep. (J Mort 3/2000)

1997

This is black-red in colour and has huge depth. Extremely powerful and solid, the nose is borderline farmyard complexity - mercaptan faulty, yet there is no denying its quality. The palate reflects the nose with it's spice, tobacco, chocolate, coffee and cherry flavours backed by the wood and pungent complexity. Great extraction, this needs cellaring. 17.5 - 18.5/20 (15/05/00 Raymond Chan at Regional Wines, NZ)

Medium to full depth colour, intense ruby heart to mulberry rim Open nose, with wood spice, tarriness, marmite, beef extract, shoe polish, some chemical whiffs, leather, black fruits, smokiness, some stinkiness Dry entry, firm tannins, nose follows through onto palate, some chemical elements, some bitterness, tarry, some fruit in background. Medium length and good structure. Very disjointed still.
I tasted this blind, and at first thought it to be something from the Rhone valley, but the fruit on the palate has a New World character, and with some swirling in the glass I came back to pinotage.
Some weeks before the above tasting, I had the wine at a dinner party, where it was decanted at least an hour before it was served. This made a big difference to the wine, and although still tight, it was good with rare roast beef.
So it seems at this stage you either keep the wine or make sure you decant it! (tasted 07/99 by Rudolph Erasmus)

It had a leafy, herbal aroma at first then berries. In the palate it was leafy and tannic with dusty, pongy, acidic and sour flavours. Nick, a friend tasting at the same time, said he found 'black olives' which is what I attributed to be sourness. It did, however, have a lengthy finish. I wonder whether we had a bad bottle or perhaps 1997 was not such a good vintage in South Africa.( tasted 07/99 by Sue Courtney)

1995

Chocolate plums, tremendous structure and tannins, this is still a baby, incredible long aftertaste. Excellent(PFM 05/2002)
1995

Soft and full, with intense fruits, lots of oak and an almost floral bouquet, this is a powerful wine, with layer after layer of dark cherries, ripe plums and currants that continue to unfold, this is a wine that is drinking well now but will age well for at least 4 - 5 years longer. Score 92. (Consistent with findings of an earlier tasting). ( Daniel Rogov 7/99)

1994 - CIWG Auction Reserve

Opaque purple-coloured wine, exhibiting a complex bouquet of raspberries, youngberries, sweet cherries, loganberries. Sweet fruit all but masks buttery, creamy tannins with excellently integrated acid structure. In the mouth there is astonishing richness, medium to full-bodied and a chewy finish that, however, ends fairly abruptly after 10 secs. Interestingly, given extended aeration, the initially Burgundian characteristics give way to stronger cassis and licorice flavours. David pointed out that the wine developed Grenache-like flavours typically associated with wines from the Languedoc, thereby identifying the ringer in this blind tasting. This is one of the best South African Pinotages I ever tasted and is highly commended: kudos to winemaker Beyers Truter for this remarkable effort [92v]. ( tasted by Victor Randall 8/99)

1993

Closed nose, soft warm palate, very soft subdued cherry flavours and ripe tannins (PFM 02/2003)
1993

Full bodied, concentrated and with an abundance of oak this truly lovely wine has plenty of smooth tannins and flavors of blackurrants and plums that linger nicely onthe palate. Drinkable now but should store well for another 3 - 4 years. Score 92. ( Daniel Rogov 7/99)

Appearance: plum, brown edges, clear Nose: strawberries, bananas, vanilla, forthcoming, farmyard/mushroom, no off odours Palate: strawberries, bananas, vanilla, well balanced re fruit/tannin/acid, smooth. Good aftertaste Conclusion: Good balance, well structured, follows through from nose to palate. Complex wine. Excellant now and will stay great for a few years. Has been wooded. Good food wine. (Jane Mort 01/00)

1992

Unusual for Kanonkop because this wine is far softer than one has come to expect. That is not a drawback, however, for this full-bodied wine is loaded with pleasant chocolate and wild berry flavors and aromas and flavors that seem to linger on and on after the wine has been swallowed. Drinking well now, but should store well for several years longer. Score 89. ( Daniel Rogov 7/99)

Sue Courtney says the 1997 "is a soft, savoury wine with hints of spice and is popular with followers of this grape." and "the Kerr Farm Pinotage from the 1998 vintage is simply stunning. While I have always been of follower of this label and always been a keen Pinotage fan, this wine is one of the best New Zealand pinotage's that I've ever tried.
The wine is a rich crimson red colour of medium to deep opacity with bright pink tints on the rim.
On the nose there is at first berry fruit backed up by meaty, smoky, and even baked tomato scents.
In the palate are upfront forest fruits reminiscent of wild cherries, raspberries and plums. (Do these grow in the forest - I don't know - it just reminds me of the fruit in my 'Fruit of the Forest' yoghurt packs). The wine has some earthiness with soft toast, a touch of mint-like herbs and a splash of savoury. There's good, fairly gripping but smooth tannins. On the finish there's lifted fruit and later licorice lingers. This wine is weighty with its medium to full-bodiedness - not at all too rich and overpowering for me.
I love this lovely structured, balanced wine which leaves a fresh, vibrant feel in the mouth. It is quite complex as on every taste another character appears.
Later there's more savoury, earthy, dusty, meaty characters typical of the pinotage grape. An excellent example of the famous South African grape variety."

Klawervlei Estate Stellenbosch
Wines made organically, 95 was the first vintage.
On opening the bottle there is an intense sweet raspberry fruit perfume; I cannot remember when a bouquet has been so overpowering. The colour is dark reddish purple, no indication here this wine is over 3 years old, but there is sediment at the bottom of the bottle, and at the bottom of ones glass as the bottle is drained. The fruity nose carries into the taste, restrained, similar to a Rhone wine with echoes of Syrah in its spicyness. This is a delicious wine, with a lingering aftertaste. I think I may have committed infanticide by drinking too young. Don't misunderstand me, it is perfect, but one wonders how it would develop with more bottle age. (1995 tasted June '98)
Kleinbosch
Young Vatted Pinotage
Wellington
A brand of Cape Wine Cellars, sourcing grapes from shareholder wineries and others.
Kleinbosch is the historic name for "bush vine," originating from the Dutch settlers who came to South Africa more than 300 years ago and settled in the area where the town of Wellington is situated today. The direct translation of 'kleinbosch" is small bush, referring to the untrellised bush vines, a common sight around Wellington. Made by Alastair Maling and Kym Milne.
Bright light raspberry colour, shipped in a clear glass bottle, pleasant fresh fruity nose and taste, balanced tannin. Tasted like a light summer wine, but it packs a 13% alcohol kick.(tasted 7/98)

A new cellar. This wine is the first solo attempt by winemaker Pieter du Toit, previously with Riebeek Cellars.  label image
2000 - purple colour, warm bubblegum nose. Tastes better than smells with fresh light mouthfill redolent of sour cherries. It spent 16 months in new oak and only 200 cases were made. This is a wine I'd like to keep a while to let its complex flavours develop and meld. (PFM 02/2003)

KWV Paarl
KWV wines are widely distributed - and now even available in their home country. This is the wine I recommend to the many people who email asking which Pinotage to try. Its a good example of the variety, fairly priced and available most places.
2001 - Very dark opaque black/red colour and dry tobacco leaf nose. Big bodied wine, tasting of ripe plums, black chocolate, tobacco and leather. Firm structure and good fruit tannins, medium long aftertaste. Very Good (PFM 03/03)

1995 - Wow - what a taste explosion. Plum - so typical of pinotage, great bouquet bursting with fruit. Lovely bright colour. A fruit sweet taste with a dry aftertaste. This is what pinotage should be. A wonderful wine. More please. Winemaker Kosie Mösie, matured in French oak barrels.
