Laborie Estate Paarl
A KWV estate
The 1998 Pinotage is a plum colour with transparent, pale edges. The nose is forthcoming, with strawberries, rasberries, bananas, and vannilla. On the palate there are firm tannins, prunes, bananas, and a lingering aftertaste. It is a dry wine. The wine follows through from the nose to the palate. It is well balanced - wood/tannin/fruit. It is young and wooded. I would not drink this wine now, but cellar it for 5 years and then decide what to drink it with. The alcohol is 12%.

We also has the 1998 Pineau de Laborie a fortified pinotage with potstilled brandy made in a cognac manner. The colour is ruby with pale/transparent edges. The nose is forthcoming with good fruit, bananas, chocolate, marzipan, molasses, and vanilla. On the palate there is a lingering aftertaste, banana, molasses, vanilla, cherries, marzipan and chocolate. The wine follows through from the nose to the palate. It is well balanced - fruit/tannin/wood. The wine has been wooded. It good dessert/food wine. It is good now and will keep for 5 or 6 years. The alcohol is 17%. (Jane Mort - Oct 2000)

Lammershoek Swartland
2001 - 50% of grapes from unirrigated bush vines older than 25 years, rest from vines older than 5 years. A large barrel was used for easier control during malolactic fermentation, then matured for 5-6 months in new French oak. This wine was bottled two months previously after racking. No filtering or fining. Purple colour and attractive pencil shaving nose. Upfront fruity Pinotage flavours, chocolate, tobacco leaf, later soft tannins slide in. Good grip and length; while pleasant now it will benefit from a little more ageing. Destined for export to Germany - lucky Germany. Excellent
Landskroon Estate Paarl
1999 - Clear, medium-dark ruby-garnet colour. Classic "paintbox" esters with notes of sweet oak and a very ripe, forward plumminess. Impeccable balance and texture on the entry, with fine-grained tannins that caress the tip of the tongue. There is a real sense of physiological ripeness of the fruit in this '99 vintage. A very warm, mouthfilling leatheriness moves across the palate and is followed by a wonderful bitter large-black-table grape flavour, which translates into a long finish. Just beautiful. (Paul Bulas Jan 2002)
1996 - Reserve. Good colour, slight nose. Typical pinotage taste, medium body. Good. (PFM 02/98)

Lanzerac Stellenbosch
There's a confusing story behind Pinotage sold under the Lanzerac label. From the 2003 vintage it will be grown and made on the Lanzerac Estate. Previous vintages were made by Stellenbosch faremers Winery/Distell.
The Lanzerac label was on South Africa's - and the worlds - first pinotage wine in 1959, made from a vineyard on Bellevue Estate.
1995 -Appearance: plum, clear, transparent through glass, Nose: forthcoming, rasberry, banana. Palate: rasberry, dry, crisp, good aftertaste, vanilla, good aftertaste. Conclusion: follows through from nose to palate. Complex and well balanced. Nice now, but will improve in the next 2/3 years (J Mort 3/2000)
1995 - A classic label for the Stellenbosch Farmers Winery, the first commercial producer of the variety. Well coloured with good ruby heart. Good volume on the nose, but light and simple fruit expression. There is a strong resiny wood component pervading, old oak at that too. Quite dry, some austerity through the palate and finish. 14.5/20 (15/05/00 Raymond Chan at Regional Wines, NZ)

L'Avenir Estate Stellenbosch
Attractive estate with small hotel; bungalows circling a swimming pool.
Read our interview with winemaker Francois Naude.
2003 - Lusciously drinkable wine, sweet plummy fruits are underscored by soft tannins and uplifted by spicy mulberry tones. I just love this wine. (PFM 8/05)
2002 - Drinking perfectly now but with enough soft tannins to ensure a long life. This is a very smooth wine with a hint of creamy vanilla on the nose. The flavours are of sweetish red and black fruits and there is a very long finish from this wine. Excellent. (Keiran Molloy 12/04) 2001 - Sweet upfront fruit, dry ,middle good finish (PFM 05/03)
2000 - Made in the ripe style, with ripe grippy fruit on the palate, full bodied and modern styled. Too early to say what it might achieve with age, but not currently showing much varietal character.(Nick Alabaster 10/02)

1997 - Colour: plum, brown edges, transparent
Nose: farmyard smell, rasberries, forthcoming
Palate:farmyard, rasberries, dry, astringent, good aftertaste, good balance fruit/acid/tannins
Conclusion: well balanced, good structure, follows through from nose to palate. Nice now but will improve when tannins and acids soften. Malolactic fermentation in oak. Grapes from old vines. (J Mort 2000)
1997 - Dark garnet colour, restrained nose. Full flavour, redolent of plums and violets, but with tannin providing structure. By any standards this is a classic wine. (PFM 03/99)
1996 - Strawberries and black pepper, slightly vegetal, some astringency (PFM 02/2003)
Lebensraum Estate Worcester
Lebensraum's harvest report said "Pinotage promises very good. It is a complex full-bodied wine with well-balanced tannin structures and ripe fruit flavours. It is currently undergoing malolactic fermantation, after which it will be barrel-aged, producing a wine which will be complex with good ageing potential." (24 Feb 98)

Lemberg Estate Tulbagh
Wines are sold under the name Schindler's Pinotage after owner/winemaker Klaus Schindler. He says of the wine "This wine is treated in a natural and gentle manner. As we wish to retain precious flavours, we have not filtered the wine and this may lead to some harmless deposits occuring in the bottle. We feel that you will appreciate our efforts and that you will enjoy the Pinotage. This grape was created in South Africa and produces a wine with it's own special flavours. It is acclaimed worldwide."

   Lincoln label
2002 - Winemakers Series - Light purple with a pink rim. I detected black pepper, bananas, cherries, some tasters even said pear drops (boiled sweets). Although seemingly ripe, the taste was short with decent acidity and tannins that were not harsh. (Nicos Neocleous 11/2002)
Longridge Winery Stellenbosch
Also sells Pinotage under Bayview label
Longridge 2001 - black cherry colour, intense berry nose, very sof and jammy.
Longridge Barrel Selection 2001 - Dense purple black, very fruity, backberries with some fruit acids coming to fore (PFM 05/03)
