Paradyskloof | Stellenbosch |
Made by J H H Coetzee at Vriesenhof Winery.
This wine was surprisingly expensive.
This wine has a back label which is a real put down. Their marketing manager should perhaps consider another career. It says At Vriesenhof Cellar we believe that the finest wines emanate from superb grapes So far, so good you think. I'll have a bottle of this even though it is pricey, but it goes on Paradyskloof is the alternative label from our cellar and the wines under this label fulfil a need for the wine which can be enjoyed now or matured for a lesser period of time. So, they are saying that while the finest wines emanate from superb grapes, they aren't in this bottle! Well, thanks pal, howabout reducing the price then? |

Confession time here. The Club found this wine at Tanners of Shrewsbury and bought one bottle only because of the price. A day or so later in Wales we found the only Indian restaurant in Penryth and it was unlicensed. The nearest supermarket was some way away and it was raining. So we took the bottle of Paradyskloof from the car and enjoyed it with curry. All I can say is we enjoyed it, it stood up to the curry, had a firm fruity taste. Anyone else had this wine? (1996 tasted April 1998 in Wales)

Park Estate Pinotage 2001 - A very light and frivolous style of pinotage that is sweet and jammy with hints of cherry and pinotage's signature meatiness. Mainly sold at the winery and in the winery restaurant. (Sue Courtney Apr/02)

This small family run winery produces about 2,000 cases per year. They make zinfandel, sangiovese and merlot and have been harvesting Pinotage since 1993 from a small planting of one half acre total which they find blends well with sangiovese and syrah. The pinotage budwood came from Rubissow-Sargent. Winemaker Aaron Bader released his first Pinotage varietal in mid 1999. Forty three cases of 1998 Pinotage (which includes 10% Zinfandel) were produced. the wine was bottled on 30 March 1999 without filtration or fining. Aaron says 'we made this wine in a very fruit forward style; it has the marks of a Beaujolais. We chose to frement with a "Assmanshausen" liquid yeast from Germany. This yeast is usually used with Pinot Noir and is supposed to accent fruit and price.'
Phoenix 1998 - Dessert wine nose of sweet spicy cakes and exotic fruits. Tastes like it smells but without the sweetness. Maybe starting to oxidise? (PFM Feb/01)

2001 Soft, berry fruits but a bit dull closed middle and prickling sensation on roof of mouth. I had this in the tasting room and I think it had been open for too long (PFM 02/2003)

This is a label of Claridge Wines available through CyberCeller and in the UK from Victoria Wine.
The elegant and distinctive black and white packaging of this wine promises much, and it delivers. It has a very dark crimson/black colour and an intensely sweet, bubble-gum nose of raspberry, coconut and bitter-sweet black chocolate. On the palate there is mouth-filling, lush black cherry fruit that is ripe and almost confected. A really jammy, fruit-bomb wine like the best Beaujolais Nouveau. This isn't a "serious" style of wine, but it has terrific length and good balance. Lovely stuff. (Tom Cannavan at www.wine-pages.com
Made in a slightly heavier style than most Pinotages, and works well
even at this young age (Fiona Phillips) Soft, very soft with spicy/bramble fruitiness, making it a luscious drinking wine. I love this wine. My companion said it was like the best Rhone wines. (P May 6/99 tasting the 98 vintage)

Porterville Winery | Swartland |
If you've not heard of Porterville yet, you will. This winery is going places, moving from mostly white wines sold to to big brands to an increase in red wines and own bottlings. As well as excellent Pinotage, I particularly like the Chenin and their Shiraz just has to be tasted. Winemakers are Andre Oberholzer and Dico du Toit |

2002 Reserve Light bright nose with upfront fruit, redcurrants, plums. Promising (PFM Barrel sample 02/2003)

Private Vintners Bin 52 Limited Release | Cape |
Private Label asked Beyers Truter to make this wine for members of South Africa's Wine Society and the Diners Club.
2000 - Unirrigated bush vines were chosen, only 3-5 days on the skins inopen fermentators. After malolactic fermentation the wine matured 8 months in Nevers oak. This is super Pinotage, tasting like a cross between the approachability of Beyerskloof and class of Kanonkop. Very long aftertaste. |
