Raka label
2003 Delicous approachable plummy wine, light bodied with medium aftertaste. 13.5% (tasted at winery 10/04 PFM)
Redhill Cape
Redhill is a label used in the USA, owned by Four Quarters Trading Company. Currently the Redhill pinotage is sourced from Simonsvlei.
Redhill, Pinotage, 1995: Rich and thick, with black cherry, herbal and coffee flavors when first poured, but dying rather quickly in the glass leaving far too much earthiness on its too soft, almost half-dry finish. Score 80.(Daniel Rogov 07/99)
Remhoogte Simonsberg
1999 matured 20 months in French oak barrels. Dark intense black/brown colour, muted nose but full fat mouthfeel. Soft tannins, restrained fruit, cherry chocolate, slight bitterness of finish. Very Good (PFM 5/2002)
Rhebokskloof Estate Paarl
Wine is made solely from grapes grown on the estate. Rhebokskloof's philosophy is that a lower yield per hectare produces flavourful, characterful grapes and therefore more complex and noble wines. The soil is decomposed granite and due to its location, the farm has a cool micro climate which is beneficial to both the table and wine grapes. It is much cooler than Paarl and benefits from the gentle breezes that blow down the valley. The anticipated production for this year from the farm is 500 tons.
Dark red colour, warm fruit nose, mouth filling with a 'fruits of the forest' generosity. Wonderful wine.

Riebeek's new label
old label for Riebeek
2001 - Mulberry colour, dark chocolate, cherry and tobacco with smooth rounded tannins, dry medium-long aftertaste. Yummy. (PFM 8/02)

1996 - Impressive dark colour, almost black red-purple, light ester nose, rich raspberry taste with a hint of blackcurrant. Wonderful wine, most enjoyable. (PFM 3/98)

Rijks Private Cellar Tulbagh
New winery makes a stir by winning top wine award at 2001 Michelangelo International Wine Awards with its 2000 Pinotage.
Attractive winery location and restaurant overlooking small lake.
2001Light bright purple colour, rounded red berry fruits, soft full bodied, lingering aftertaste with tannins kicking in. (PFM 05/03)
2000 - Closed porty nose (this was 15.4% alcohol); the over-ripeness has muted the fruit but it’s similarity to port, some what big zinfandel like with dense, almost sweet from the alcohol black fruits and good overall balance has made a style which I enjoyed (not one which I’d expect to drink a lot of or with a main, but something which could work very well with a cheese course). (Nick Alabaster 10/02)
Riverside New Zealand

This "big gutsy wine with lots of flavour" was Sue Courtney's Wine of the Week. Read about it at Wine of the Week
Robertson Winery Robertson

Rooiberg Winery Robertson
Reserve 2001 - Tangy crisp fruits, interesting, dollops of fruits, spicy.
1998 - Clear medium ruby; violet at the edges. Ethereal strawberries, bananas and signature "paintbox" scents compete with noticeable alcohol (14%) for dominance on the nose. Firm, chewy, tongue-gripping bittersweet texture on the attack with balanced acidity leading into a big, warm, leathery, mouthpuckering bitter black table grape finish. Grapeskin and oak flavours linger on the palate for a good while afterwards. (P Bulas Jan 2002)
1996 - lighter (than the 92) but has the same background which will develop into a great wine in a few years. Enjoy it's youthfulness now but save a few bottles so you can savor it's development. Mike Klein Shoppers of Hillsborough (NJ USA)

1992

This is a truly unique wine with character and soul at a great price. Rich and smooth with gobs of leather, tar and glycerin. Not everyone likes it but I have found over the years of tasting great wines that many people do not like the flavors of a Mature wine...they prefer the vibrancy of youth. Rubissow-Sargent Napa Valley
California
The 1991 Rubissow-Sargent pinotage was the first and only commercially available pinotage made in the US. A very few bottles can be found in the shops. The Club is indebted to John Bailin for interviewing joint-proprietor Tony Sargent for the Club. John reports "I phoned the number on the back of the bottle and ended up speaking with Tony Sargent, one of the winery's proprietors. He was a very pleasant soul, happy to talk about his wine, and I learned the following: Tony Sargent and his partner, John Rubbisow planted about 120 Pinotage vines up on Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley in 1984. Seven years later they made their one and only batch of Pinotage. Tony found it an "ordinary red, with a sort of candy cane quality", and figured the acreage would be better used for Bordeaux varietal. He also seemed taken aback by the vine's high yield, and an uneven ripening curve. More recently the wine has developed some interesting characteristics, according to the maker. He's down to his last couple bottles. They vinified it in a classic Bordeaux style, fermenting the juice on its skins for 18 days before pressing, and spending 2 years in old French barrels. He was surprised to learn from a South African maker some time later that they (whoever that was) have a very short fermentation, and typically bottle it within the same year."
David Broudy reviewed this wine for his web-site:- "Produced from the single 2-acre stand of Pinotage (a hybrid of Pinot Noir and Cinsault, somewhat popular in South Africa) grapevines in California. A rich black fruit aroma, with smoky tannins, a little mint, a little strawberry and more blackberry fruit in the taste. $13.49" (14 Mar 96) © used with permission
Ruitersvlei Paarl
2002 - Light purple colour, a light beaujolais style wine. 13.5% alc (PFM 10/02)
