Uiterwyk Estate Stellenbosch
The family name De Waal is now taking precedence on the label, partly because many English speakers have problems pronouncing Uiterwyk and partly to avoid confusin with similarly named Uitwyk Estate.

The 'Top of the Hill' vineyard is one of the oldest.

De Waal 2001 - Purple red colour, soft warm inviting sweet juicy fruits and warm finish. (PFM 05/03) 2000 Top-of-the-Hill - Jammy red/black fruited nose, on the palate the fruit is ripe and jammy with a smokey oak overlay. (Nick Alabaster 10/02)
1996"Deep dense ruby. Full and complex nose packed with cherries, violets, chocolate and vanilla oak. Concentrated, harmonious palate of berries and oak, with tremendous fruit intensity, excellent balance and structure. a big, voluptuous yet accessible wine with a lingering finish. Delicious drinking now, but has the potential to develop over the next eight years or more" (Wine Magazine)
1995 - This is what I call an "oh wow" wine, for as you return to the glass for consecutive tastings you are always tempted to call out "oh wow..." as the wine opens, smoothens out and assumes elegance in the glass. With concentrated flavors and aromas of cherry, berries and roasted tobacco and even hints of black olives, and violets, this is a wine that deserves to be tried now and then again every year for the next five or six years. Score 89+. (Daniel Rogov 07/99)
