'La Cave' premium label is worth seeking out for stunning Pinotage.

'La Cave' 2001 - Very dark, stains the glass, enjoyable ground coffee tang with crisp acidic finish and long aftertaste. 1997 - Bright light purple colour swirling into the glass giving rise to a soft fruity nose. A taste like juicy sweet raspberries. A refreshing wine for gulping, but with enough backbone from oak ageing to stand up to food. Very enjoyable, but I had slight guilt feelings that I was drinking this wine too early. What will it be like with a few years bottle age? Only one way to find out. Check this site again in a couple of years! (05/1998)
Warwick Estate Stellenbosch
Walk up the acorn covered wooden slatted slope to this modern winery and you could be as lucky as we were to have a tutored tasting of Warwick Estate wines given by owner/winemaker Norma Ratcliffe. The Traditional Bush Vine Pinotage is excellent; one of the top pinotages anywhere, and winner of several prizes. But we feel that Trilogy, a traditional Bordeaux blend is receiving priority.
2001 - Soft sweet and fruity - blackberries and blackcurrants, with very spicy mouthfeel. Lively and excitingly moreish.(PFM 5/03)
2001- Wonderful warm minty and fruity big bodied wine, supported by soft tannins. Wonderful
2000 - Good dark colour, restrained wine that repays attention. Verry Good (PFM 10/02)

1999 - Colour is very dark with bright garnet flashes when it catches the light. Initial nose shows distinct Pinotage characteristics, a mix of plums, dark chocolate and hint of tobacco leaf.
These develop on the palate - this is a deep complex wine with plums foremost, black cherries and unsweetened dark chocolate weaving over tannins. With food the tannins are tamed and Pinotage's inherent sweetness comes to the forefront. We drink the wine quickly, but should have tarried as it develops, softens and opens out even more in the last remaining glass.
A lovely classic wine by any standards. (PFM 06/03) 1995 - The bottle showed a dark streak of sediment when removed from the cellar, and we stood it upright all day till it settled. The wine displayed a bright deep red colour and a perfumed nose. The taste was restrained and with spice and plums coming through. While capable of further ageing this wine is perfectly delicious now. (PFM 11/98).

Inky dark colour, almost no nose at all. Very closed taste, dry, high acidity. Not pleasant to drink by itsself, better with food. Back label says it has spent 1 year in oak and is ready for drinking now. Tasting it at the end of 97 means it has had 1 year in barrel and almost 2 years in bottle. I would say it needs a lot longer to be ready. The fruit is completely hidden, it is austere, lean. (1995 Vintners Reserve Pinotage)

1999 - Restrained classy wine with good balance of forward fruit and tannins. Excellent wine - with excellent meal!) (P May Feb 2000)

1996 Pinotage is light in taste, with two flavours alternating as though the wine has not married properly. Boiled sweets and violets. Not unpleasant, but unbalanced and disappointing.
