Robert E. Lee (1807-1870)
Robert E. Lee is One of the Southern Generals whom are now loved by
both North and South.
- Born January 18 1807 in Stratford Virginia
- Graduated from West Point 2nd in his class in 1829
- Wounded in the Mexican War in 1847, at Chapultepec
- Was Superintendent of West Point when he was promoted to Colonel of
Calvary
- Was Commander of the Department of Texas
- Called to Washington by Lincoln in early 1861 and asked to command
Union Forces
- April 20, 1861, Lee resigned from the Union Army and left for Richmond
- April 23 he was givin Command of all Naval and Army forces in Virginia
- February 1865, Lee was made Commander of all Confederate Armies
- April 1865, Lee surrendered to Gen Grant at Appomattox Court House
- Lee became President of Washington College after the war (now Washington
and Lee)
- Applied for amnesty, but never recieved it
- Died on October 12, 1870
- Was givin his Citizenship by an act of Congress in 1975
