James Ewell Brown
Stuart (1833-1864)
- Born in Patrick County Virginia, in 1833
- Called Jeb Stuart
- Was a U.S. Cavalry officer until the start of the Civil War
- Joined the Confederate Cavalry at the outbreak of the Civil War
- Was considered by Lee, "the eyes of the army"
- Road completely around Gen McClellan's Army of the Potomac in June
of 1862
- The information generated by this recon helped The Army of Northern
Virginia defeat Gen McClellan in the Seven Days' Battle
- Raided Gen Pope's headquarters and took a list of Popes troop positions,
which helped Lee win the Second Battle of Bull Run
- Promoted to Major General in July of 1862, and given command of Cavalry,
in the Army of Northern Virginia
- Was a major reason for Confederate success in the battles of Fredricksburg
and Chancellorsville
- Arrived late to the Battle of Gettysburg, causing Lee not to have adequate
knowledge of federal positions or troop numbers
- Was fatally wounded at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, on May 10, 1864,
and died two days later
