Joseph E Johnston
(1807-1891)
- Born in Prince Edward County Virginia in 1807
- Was Union Soldier before the war
- Participated in most of the major campaigns of the Civil War
- Saved Confederate forces and General Beauregard at the First Battle
of Bull Run
- Lost Vicksburg to General Grant in 1863
- Lost Atlanta to General Sherman in 1864
- Was a much better Commander than his record showed
- Represented Virginia in the House of Representatives from 1879-1881
- Railroad Commissioner from 1887-1891 (appointed to this post by Pres.
Cleveland)
- Wrote Narrative of Military Operations During the Civil War
in 1874
