• Born in Prince Edward County Virginia in 1807
• Was Union Soldier before the war
• Participated in most of the major campaigns of the Civil War
• Saved Confederate forces and General Beauregard at the First Battle of Bull Run
• Lost Vicksburg to General Grant in 1863
• Lost Atlanta to General Sherman in 1864
• Was a much better Commander than his record showed
• Represented Virginia in the House of Representatives from 1879-1881
• Railroad Commissioner from 1887-1891 (appointed to this post by Pres. Cleveland)
• Wrote Narrative of Military Operations During the Civil War in 1874
