Nathan Bedford
Forrest (1821-1877)
- Born near Chapel Hill, Tennessee in 1821
- Was a horse and cattle farmer, and a slave trader before the war
- Enlisted as a Private at the start of the war
- He raised a battalion of Cavalry, and was made Lt. Col.
- Fought in the battle at Fort Donelson in 1862
- Fought in the Battle of Shiloh
- From 1862 through 1863 he executed several successful raids in Union
Territory in Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, and Mississippi
- Made Commander of all Cavalry in the Army of Tennessee in 1864
- Won Battles at Fort Pillow and Brices Cross Roads in 1864
- There was controversy over his massacre of Black troops at Fort Pillow
- Was put in command of all Cavalry in Alabama, Mississippi and Eastern
Louisiana in 1865
- Made a Lt. General in February of 1865
- Was beaten at the Battle of Selma, Alabama in March of 1865 by General
Wilson
- Surrendered in May or 1865
- He lived in Memphis Tennessee on two Plantations after the War
- Became the first leader of the Klu Klux Klan
- Tried to Disband the KKK in 1869 and failed
