James Longstreet
(1821-1904)
- Born in the Edfield District of South Carolina on January 8th 1821
- Graduated from West Point
- Fought in the Mexican War and was promoted to Major for his Gallantry
- Resigned his US Army commission at the beginning of the Civil War
- Commissioned into the Confederate Army as a Brig General
- Commanded a Brigade at the first Battle of Bull Run
- Promoted to Major General in 1862
- Aided a successful withdrawal of the Army of Northern Virginia during
the Peninsular Campaign in mid 1862
- Was pivitol in the victory of the Second Battle of Bull Run, due to
his tactics
- Received a promotion to Lt. General for his skills in the battles at
Antietam and Fredricksburg
- Was transferred to the Army of Tennessee after the Battle at Gettysburg
(supposedly due to his failure to take the offensive when he was supposed
to)
- He saved the Confederacy from total defeat at the Battle of Chickamauga
in September 1863
- Was wounded badly in May of 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness
- Was with Robert E. Lee at the surrender at Appomattox
- Served as the Minister to Turkey from 1880 to 1881
- Joined the Republican Party after the War, which earned him bad standing
amoung fellow Southerners
- Was the Federal Commissioner of Pacific railroads in Gainsville Georgia
from 1897 until his death on January 2 1904
