• Born near New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1818
• Graduated from West Point
• Fought in the Mexican War from 1846-1848
• Resigned from the U.S. Army in February, 1861
• Joined the Confederate Army
• April 1861, directed Confederate forces to bombard Fort Sumter
• Second in Command at the First Battle of Bull Run
• Took command after Shiloh, when A.S. Johnston was killed
• Commanded defending Confederate forces in 1863 from Union Navy attack at Charleston, S. Carolina
• Defeated General Butler at Drury's Bluff, Virginia in May of 1864
• Became President of the New Orleans, Jackson, and Mississippi Railroad after the War
