• Born near Lexington, Kentucky in 1821
• Educated in Law
• Fought in the U.S. Army in the Mexican War
• Was elected to the Kentucky State Legislature and served in the House of Representatives from 1851 to 1855
• Was Elected as James Buchanan's Vice President, on the Democratic ticket, in 1856
• Was Proslavery
• Ran against Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and lost
• Helped organize the Confederate Government
• Was commissioned into the Confederate Army as a Brig General in 1862
• Appointed Secratery of War to Jeff Davis from January to April of 1865
• Left the U.S. for Europe at the end of the War
• Returned to practice Law in the U.S. in 1869
