John C. Breckenridge
(1821-1875)
- Born near Lexington, Kentucky in 1821
- Educated in Law
- Fought in the U.S. Army in the Mexican War
- Was elected to the Kentucky State Legislature and served in the House
of Representatives from 1851 to 1855
- Was Elected as James Buchanan's Vice President, on the Democratic ticket,
in 1856
- Was Proslavery
- Ran against Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and lost
- Helped organize the Confederate Government
- Was commissioned into the Confederate Army as a Brig General in 1862
- Appointed Secratery of War to Jeff Davis from January to April of 1865
- Left the U.S. for Europe at the end of the War
- Returned to practice Law in the U.S. in 1869
