The Fairfield Four (they can't count either) made what is by far my favorite gospel album. They, in one form or another, have been around since like 1921! The group on this album is made up of two guys that joined the FF4 in the '40s, (they also achieved success as the Famous Skylarks in the '60s) one fellow that was also in the Skylarks, and two newer guys. After some years apart, they got back together around 1980 something for a TV documentary. They started singing together again, weekly, and then cut this great album in 1991. |
This site reviews another album of the Fairfield Four, though none of the singers on this album are on the one from 1991. This album is made of cuts from 1950-1953, which is after Issac Freeman and James Hill quit in the '40s. The recording quality is of course not so great, and the style of music is not what I like so much. |
In September of '97, the Fairfield Four brought out a new CD on the Warner Bros. label, "Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray". One of the fellows, William Richardson, from the '91 album, passed away, and another, Walter Settles, had a stroke. So two guys are new on this CD though one had been in the FF4 earlier. (It's not easy trying to keep the membership straight!) One of the new ones, Joe Rice, is just 22 years old, and brings with him a much more modern style. He has an amazing voice, and a style which is more modern than the mellow leads of the 1991 album. |
The Fairfield Four have just released a new CD which is really cool! It's called "Wreckin the House". This one is a live recording from 1989, done in a small church in Tennessee. This was kind a 'kick-off' concert that started their new launch back into touring and recording. I wonder if they knew then that it would lead to a Grammy! This CD doubles as a computer CD-ROM, and has a home-video of the Four singing. Don't miss it! |
