When I first caught wind of a new version of 3rd edition I thought to myself "just another way for GW to screw more money out of us". The more I learned about "3rd Edition" the more I began to like it. GW has really simplified the game and made it more strategic rather then just they guy with the best weapons will just sit there and blow the other general out of the water.
Obviously one of their goals was to make it more easier to pick up for new players. thus attracting more players. But with all good things comes the bad. GW has not perfected WarHammer 40k. One flaw I find is that the game lacks the variety second edition had. All weapons are generalized rather then being unique which has taken away some flavour. Basically they have simplified every aspect of Warhammer 40,000. Whether it's armour penetration, close combat, dice rolls. Most like the changes as do I but it really is a personal decision. If you want more variety go play Necromunda.
