Short biography.

Pinchas Sadeh emigrated to Israel in 1934. He lived in Magdiel, later in Tel Aviv. He published essays, poems, etc. first in "Bam'ale", in "Ha'aretz" newspaper. He wrote several books of poems and novels. He died of cancer in 1984.

About the translation.

I have translated these poems while Sadeh was still alive. Inspite of his notorious misanthropy, he received guests - poets and others - well. He knew these translations, even tried on an occassion to suggest corrections ("Without rhymes it won't do" - he said).

The most thorough and educative book about Pinchas Sadeh has been published only recently (20.5.2004) in Hebrew:

A programme in the Israeli Broadcasting Service - under the name ( and by) "[Mr.] Avi Katzmann and Six Listeners" was broadcast about the book in particular and about P. Sadeh in general on the 21st and the 24th of July 2004.
