Six Degrees of Separation, Five Degrees of Anxiety
“Six Degrees of Separation, Five Degrees of Anxiety” is an old work of mine first done in paint. It was a personal piece of identity exploring how some people may see a minority race (and a minority race may see themselves). Reducing a person down to his or her occupation, intellect, and mannerism based on the one character of their skin, the color or even the shade. I switched mediums, paint for photography, four years ago. I decided to revisit the idea of profiling since the whole nation has done so too; and has found an excuse and comfort in doing so in this age of security.
The title of the piece is an equally important part of the work. It allows the audience to interact with the work. The work itself is made up of five individual impressionistic photographs. To see form, one would step back but to see the beauty and the subtlety of color, one should step close and allow the prints to dissolve.
