Who qualifies
|
Anyone who is positive, works well with others, has something to contribute and possesses a natural affection for the people we are trying to help (poor children and abandoned mothers). Age, sex, race, religion and national origin make no difference. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

Types of work
|
Language teachers (especially English), social workers, construction and maintenance, child minding, food service, teaching: PC, internet, recycling, arts and crafts, music, farm skills, basic education; medical, project development, children's rights, psychology, child and mothers' advocacy, pure water and basic shelter. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

Room, Board and privileges
|
We offer our international volunteers lodging on our campus*, three meals five days a week (Week ends, holidays and days when we are not feeding children not included), use of our internet (during specified times, 1/2 hour per day), basic medical care (subject to availability of our volunteer doctors; cost of medicine, clinics, specialists and hospital care not included - though we do have some free medicines), and free or discount admission to some of the cultural events in Trujillo (Note: bring at least one evening outfit which will permit you to enter events where there is a dress code).*All International volunteers must live on campus or in approved accommodation. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

There is no cost to register as a volunteer with Arriba Ya (Bruce Peru). All volunteers pay a contribution to our work in the amount of $230* per month. This is a donation and has no relationship to room and board, which are free. This amount must be paid in advance. Bruce Peru is self sustaining, we are all volunteers and do not rely on government or instutional support. Note: We approve a little more than half of the serious applications we receive. However, we have evaluated and approved a considerable number of applications for volunteers who fail to turn up. For this reason we now require that if your arrival date is more than one month after the time your application is approved you must reconfirm by email your continued intention to come once each month in order for your place to remain reserved; and at least two weeks before you arrive you must email us confirming your arrival date and travel arrangements, and your contribution must have been received.*As from 01.01.2004 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| First breakfast here at our little campus, then the daily session on our internet (which continues on and off all day depending on when there are PC classes for children or the PCs are being used for project development - free: minimum 1/2 hour per day). The volunteer goes to the parks and principal intersections in the city center to meet street children who come in from the barrios to sell sweets, shine shoes, wash cars, beg or steal. The volunteer befriends them: invites them to come eat with us for free. Also, if the children have medical or dental problems (as practically all have), informs them where and when we offer free medical and dental services. At lunchtime receives the children invited in the morning and introduces them to other volunteers, the social worker, psychologist and if necessary to the doctor or dentist as well as to other children. Lunch with the other volunteers, free time or a bit of play with children who are not in school in the afternoon, then the volunteer teaches a one hour course in a familiar subject (optional). In the late afternoon the volunteer works on development projects either in the office or in the field. The day ends for some with the night meal, 6:00 - 8:00 PM, others teach language courses until 8:00 or 9:00 PM. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

all volunteers; doctors, dentists, three economists, lots of social workers,
even more university students (medicine, systems, education, psychology,
communication, architecture), cooks, lots and lots of teachers, child minders,
psychologists, attorneys, engineers, a biologist, nurses, musicians, artists
and laborers. The shortest time anyone has volunteered is one day; the longest
so far is two years. Our
best volunteers so far have come from England, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. Demographics
