PURRS,MEOWS & HOWLS

"A dog is prose - a cat is a poem."
Jean Burden

Although we didn't actually compose the following poems
we do provide the "inspiration" for them!
(That should count for something, don't you think?)
But we like to be fair and give credit where credit is due
so we have to admit that our "mom" wrote them.
She'll write some for you too - just ask!
Her e-mail address is on the bottom of the page.

"The most precious things in life
aren't things!"

GOD'S CREATURES

WHEN I HEAR, "IT'S JUST AN ANIMAL!"
I HAVE BUT ONE REPLY.
SUPPOSE THOSE VERY WORDS WERE UTTERED
REGARDING YOU OR I?
WHAT IF WE WERE LEFT OUTSIDE
IN SNOW OR FREEZING RAIN?
DEPRIVED OF FOOD AND SHELTER -
FRIGHTENED OR IN PAIN!
AS HUMANS WE HAVE CHOICES -
TO HELP OR CLOSE OUR EYES.
BUT IT'S TOO LATE TO SAY WE CARE -
AFTER SOMETHING DIES!
WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION -
TO OUR "FRIENDS" BOTH LARGE AND SMALL.
PERHAPS WE SHOULD REMEMBER -
WE'RE "GOD'S CREATURES", ONE AND ALL!

"There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats."
Albert Schweitzer

WE'RE ALL BEAUTIFUL

When I was a kitten - they called me a "cutie"!
Now that I'm grown up - they say I'm a "beauty"!

Of course I'm a "beauty", what else could I be?
All cats are "beauties" - just look carefully!

At our soft, silky fur and our luminous eyes!
And our low, "soothing" purr is a pleasant surprise!

It can lull you to sleep - it can take you away,
to a happier time or a less stressful day!

When you love US you'll understand how much we're worth.
When we love YOU you'll know why God put us on earth!

Did you know that we have different purr types?
Just listen - we are telling you something.
Even and loud: Contentment
Swift and terse: Fear or intimidation
Soft and flowing: Drowsy, almost asleep
Fast and highly segmented: Anticipation!

I'M HERE FOR YOU

Put down that paper - look at me!
I need attention - can't you see?

Come play with me for just awhile.
I guarantee I'll make you smile!

If you feel sad, I'll stop your tears!
Just stroke my fur and scratch my ears.

There's so much I can give to you.
Enjoy these days before they're through!

"Kittens are born with their eyes shut.
They open them in about 6 weeks, take a look around,
then close them again for the better part of their lives!"

PARTNERS

"There's a mouse in the house!" said the man to the cat.
Cat opened one eye and thought, "How about that!"

"There it is!" said the man. "Go and catch it - be quick!"
"When I'm through with my bath," thought the cat. "One more lick!"

"Go now," said the man, "or no tuna for you!"
"Tuna!" thought kitty. "Hm-m-m-m, what can I do?"

So he cornered the mouse and he lowered his voice.
"I don't want to chase you but I don't have a choice!"

So just listen up - I have a great plan!
Pretend that you're scared - run as fast as you can!

Be certain to throw in a couple of squeals!
And I'll follow closely - right on your heels!

Run to the door with the flap meant for me.
I'll chase you right through it and then you'll be free!"

"Yahoo!" said the mouse. "I like how you play!"
"My pleasure!" said cat. "Come back any day!

See, each time I chase you I get a nice treat!
So please, visit often - cause I LOVE to eat!"

I'M A CAT!

I'm a cat - and that is that!
I'm not a bird, a dog, a horse
and that of course makes me the best.
A better pet than all the rest!
I rule the house, I reign supreme.
If there's a mouse, no need to scream.
Just call me and I'll catch the pest.
For I'm a cat - remember that.

I'm always clean, I'm always neat.
I'll let you pat me (if I choose)
but I won't "grovel" at your feet,
and I won't ever chew your shoes!
I never drool or bark or yap.
And I will gladly let you nap.
I'll even let you share "my" bed.
(My favorite spot is on your head.)
For I'm a cat - remember that!

Your furry "king" or "queen" with claws -
which I don't use without due cause.
Your human traits I'll tolerate
as long as you don't make me wait
too long for chicken, cheese, or fish -
those tasty tidbits in my dish.
My wants and needs come first you see
(but that's just how it's meant to be)
since I "own" you and you "serve" me!
For I'm a cat - and that is that!

THE "FOREVER" GIFT

ONCE I WAS A KITTEN
THEY THOUGHT I WAS SO SWEET.
BUT NOW I'M ALWAYS IN THEIR FACE
(OR UNDERNEATH THEIR FEET!)
THEY SAY I'M TOO DEMANDING
I INTERRUPT THEIR SLEEP.
THEY FORGET THAT I'M A GIFT
THAT GOD HOPED THEY WOULD KEEP!
I'M MUCH MORE THAN A PLAY THING
CREATED JUST FOR FUN
TO BE DISCARDED OR IGNORED,
WHEN THE PLAYING IS DONE.
I WONDER WHY THEY JUST CAN'T SEE
(ALTHOUGH I'M OLD AND SLOW)
THE KITTEN STILL INSIDE OF ME -
THEY ONCE LOVED YEARS AGO!

Meal Time

Sybil likes to nibble - making each meal last.
But Teddy gulps with gusto - eating very fast.
Emma savors (lady-like) each and every bite.
While Scooter visits every bowl - grazing through the night!
Casey likes consistency - the same food every day.
But Rocky can be finicky and simply walk away.
Max will sniff and sample - then eat what he likes best.
Simba shares with Shenzi - he eats first, she gets the rest!
Although each cat is different - in this they're all the same.
They have no use for advertising or some labels claim.
They decide what food they like - so save your pleading voice.
What cats eat (or don't eat) will always be their choice!

FIRST THINGS FIRST

DUST ON THE TABLES - CAT HAIRS ON THE FLOOR.
THE DISHES WERE WASHED BUT NOW THERE ARE MORE!
THE DIRTY CLOTHES PILE SEEMS TO BE A MILE HIGH.
WHERE TO BEGIN? - I THINK WITH A SIGH.
(I FLUFF UP A PILLOW AND PICK UP A SHOE.)
BUT MY CATS NEED ATTENTION - AS ALL "CHILDREN" DO.
TEDDY STARES - "SIT I COULD SURE USE A LAP."
EMMA YAWNS - "LIE DOWN - IT'S TIME FOR OUR NAP."
SCOOTER PURRS - "LET'S PLAY!" AND DROPS HIS TOY MOUSE.
I LOOK IN THEIR EYES AND I GLANCE THROUGH THE HOUSE.
MY DECISION IS EASY - I DON'T HESITATE.
THE VACUUMING, DUSTING AND LAUNDRY CAN WAIT!
