Dog of Many Colors

Once Upon a Time, in a far away land, lived many Havanese. They are like all Havanese today, except their coats where only purest white, like their Maltese and Bichion brethren. There where not called Havanese, either. There where Bichion Hava.
One day, however, a young pup by the name of Nese couldn’t figure out why Havas where only one color. He asked his sire and dam, grandsire and granddam, and every other Hava in the pack. No one had a good answer. So he figured that there was nothing wrong with being many colors, and set off to find something that would change Havas many colors.
So, he set off. He needed to find something that in itself was many many colors. He traveled many days and could not find anything. One day, he stopped to get a drink at the river. He looked at his reflection in the water. That was it! Water sparkles many colors! He didn’t know how to rub it on himself, so he jumped in. Oh, when he came back any color BUT white, how everyone would be surprised! He jumped out, shook off, and looked at himself on the reflection in the water again. He was still white, but only wet. He was discouraged, but continued on.
Then he found berries. Berries would not produce as many colors as the water, but he would not be white! He pulled some off and rolled in them. Oh! He was red now! He started to hurry back to his pack. On the way, he had to cross a river. He swam across it. But he noticed when he got out that the red had washed off! He kept searching.
That night, he had a dream that the moon was so many different colors. He woke up. That was it! He needed a piece of the moon! He tried to jump up, but he couldn’t get it. He tried jumping off a tree to get the moon, but that didn’t work either. Then he remembered the Great Wise Hava telling him something about Hava Magic. So Nese held his breath, and jumped. He jumped so high, this time he landed on the moon! He took a chunk of moonstone and jumped back to Earth. He took a little piece off the moonstone and rubbed it all over him. He felt pins and needles all over, then looked at himself in the reflection of the water. He was blue! He swam the river and looked in it again. He was still! Clutching the moonstone, he ran back to the pack. He explained to all of them his story, and changed them all different colors – some where red, others chocolate, white and black, gray, black, brindle, black and tan, and some where a mixture of all the colors. When he was at the end of the line, he was running out of coloring rock. So, a few Havas where off-white, and a few remained white. Then the Great Wise Hava called everyone to order.
"In honor of this young pup, we shall change our name. We will no longer be Havas. Well will now be
Havanese."
And so the coloring and the same sake was kept.
