Dear Otago Polytech ASTE people

Congratulations on the Web site. I have a circulated the URL to our
branch.

We have a performance related career structure here but every one has
the chance of progressing over various bars. It is seen as fair and
professional.

Performance pay systems unless everyone is capable of achieving the
increment within normal work is just a cap on wages...

Stick to your guns.

Keep up the good fight! Best of luck from up the hill,

(Was very intersted to read Dr K's
comments about class in the ODT earlier this week and then followed the
next day by news of this strike. A neat example of the reality that
working
class struggles aren't just something that is part of people's individual
childhoods, even if the ODT portrays them as such)

I am writing to express my support for the Polytech staff. I watched them
march past our doorstep on Albany St, and admire their commitment to take
this action.

Unfortunately, I am not available to call in and support in person today,
but I am there in spirit!!!!

You have mine!!!!!
(support that is)

KIA KAHA!

Wishing you a good outcome in your efforts for the staff at Otago
Polytechnic.

write to support you and the ASTE in their negotiations with Otago
Polytechnic. If employees of Universities and Ploytechnics are to survive
in the "user-pays" economy, we have to get out and fight to make sure our
employeers pays what we're worth. I'm afraid it will take some
unpleasntness to counteract the perception that collegiality=naivete.
All the best,

just a quick note of support for your industrial action. Kia kaha !

We saw the Polytech staff marching past today. I would like to register my
support for the staff in relation to their strike action. I hope something
comes of it and wish them well as they continue their action.

Dear Kris,

Solidarity greetings from the Association of University Staff. We understand
the frustration which has prompted your members to strike. Staff across the
tertiary sector are being left with no choice but to take industrial action,
to protect not only their own interests, but those of the students and
country's education system as a whole. We wish you every success in
achieving your goals. Jane Kelsey, National President, AUS

Hi Kris,
Please pass on this message of heartfelt support to Neville and all
of the members at the Otago Polytechnic from their friends and
colleagues at MIT. We understand that your claim is based on the
'group' settlement. That claim and settlement was moderate and
responsible......you should not be expected to settle for less.
An attack on your Tutor Discretionary Leave is buying into a fight
and losing a great deal of valuable goodwill in the process. I hope
that youe Chief Executive is getting some sensible advice from her
colleagues in Napier this week and will return with a fresh approach.
Good Luck....we regret that our support is reduced to this level in
these enlightened ECA times.
Regards,
Ken Mackenzie.........Branch Chair MIT.

Keep up your resolve, right is on your side. You deserve better than have to
take industrial action, which decision will not have been made lightly. We
at Nelson will watch the results of your actions with interest as our
negotiations start early next month and we also have a negative and
intransigent management.

All power to those of you on the picket line today!

We were very proud to hear your action mentioned on National
Radio this morning.
It is so important that you hold the line against the New Right
policies of your boss. "Flexibility" is just another word for
exploitation, because the way they apply it is all one way -- their
way.
They will try to portray ASTE members as being in the dark ages
for fighting to hold on to conditions that attempt to control
burgeoning workloads.
But they too should be concerned about quality education. It
makes good business sense for staff to have time to develop the
best quality programmes. Otherwise students will go elsewhere.
It also makes good business sense for employers to pay salaries
that attract the best teachers. Otherwise staff will go elsewhere.
And where would they be without students and without staff?

Kia kaha. We're with you in spirit.

Jill

on yer Kris, you explained the situation very clearly; management's

Hi Chris, heard you on the Radio this morning and came across
well.
Message to Otago Colleagues.
Greetings to you all from your colleagues and friends in
Christchurch. Well done on your continued stance as regards a
reasonable and logical set of working conditions. It may interest you
that in 1992 the Employers made a big noise in negotiations to
achieve 365 days open and 24 hour per day "like New York".
Faced with reality they had to eventually agree that until 15 million
people live within a hundred miles or so its a stupid idea!!
The demands on you by your 'wandaful ' CEO are equally foolish
(not to mention confrontational ) and YOU are doing the RIGHT
thing!!!!
Congratulations and all the best to you all,
Lloyd Woods on behalf Christchurch Poly Branch
ps--it also concerns me that a 7 day Poly will lead to the likes of
my Apprentices having to do all off-job training in the weekends and
at their own expense. In your action you are standing up for many
besides yourself THANK YOU!!
