V for Vendetta
V is annoncing what i've been saying even before the sad day of September 11. The return of fascism into our homes and lives. This 1984ish vision of a future not so far is interesting except is ridiculous conclusion. I must say at first, that if this flick had a good logic that it reflect or showed our future it shouldn't be that positive at the end. In my opinion, Brazil is a far more achieved work than V when speaking of 1984 inspirations. Adapted from comic books, V show us a world dominated by an extreme right leader that recalls the Nazi Germany and Big Brother. Personnally, I think that our world is already lost and we could absolutely do nothing in the way V for Vendetta is structured because the problem is not the leader, it's the people who elected the leader. This is one of the weakest points about V, the people are showned as like they would follow a travestite without a face who is called by the anthorities a terrorist. Sorry, but the story is very ludic but on this point misanthropy is a better solution than destroying the parliament. Fear is already used to crush people's power and the government. On another level, some cameos from Full Metal Jacket, Brazil and the Matrix are well used. It is on the vain of adaptations of comic books on the screen (never as good as Sin City and A History of Violence) but it is a good effort. Portman proves her versatility from passing from Star War to Closer to this character; Evey. In conclusion, I will analyze more deeper the effects of the adaptations of comic books onto the Cinema with my work in progress. On the topic of V for Vendetta, nice try but to me the story don't stick... I think Romero's Dead serie is more up to date. by Michael Parent |
