I don't think we can say this enough -- the kOOk's/Climbers party was the best bash I've been to in years. It was a good crowd, a great house, and the band was fantastic!

Well, about "kOOks, tHe bAnd" here is a brief history:

It all started in Holger's basement one Saturday afternoon about a couple years ago after a surf session. I noticed he had a drum kit down there and I mentioned I played the guitar. Holger and I soon thrashed out a half dozen tunes including the classic surf instrumentals "Pipeline" and "Wipeout."

Click on the pictures for an enlarged view.

There were some early jam sessions, rather crude ones. There's Brio auditioning singing and Keith Treco on the left trying out on the acoustic.

There's a better shot of me, KevinO, with my surf/grunge guitar, and our infamous drummer Holger the Horrible.

We took the band on the road to Puerto Rico where we had sometimes guitarist Keith Treco, and where we developed a percussion section with a little salsa blood and I started seriously working on my tremelo picking with old mandolin I found in my parent's attic and restored.

After finding rehearsal studios in New York City and near our fav surf breaks on the Jersey shore, we realized that Wave Dave (not shown) was an accomplished blues/lead guitarist and that Karl was guitar troubadour and songwriter of some local reknown. More recently we've added some tres fancy tenor sax wailings by my neighbor Mike (not shown), an accomplished player. It took some convincing but the rock n'roll soul of Doug (not shown) finally prevailed and he splurged on a bass and amp sometime early in 1998, and has been seriously studying the instrument ever since.

Hey guys we're startin' ta be havin' some real fun here... Like most drummers Holger is slightly demented... he sounds alot better now that he got real drums and cymbals!!!

Karl is prone to some hotdogging both in and out of the water... he carries alot of the guitar solos. Scott our adjunct songwriter is in the background.

Now we have some original surf instrumentals and neopunk/gothic rock numbers coming along with our traditional surf instrumental music, classic rock, and punk rock cover tunes.

That's Christina our rhythm guitarist and vocalist.

Just a word of thanks to all the kOOks who worked hard to make the band's debut an unmitigated success. Scott and his accompaniment Ralph put on a great set of his original songs on acoustic guitars which drew strong applause. Karl also performed a couple of original acoustic numbers and gave us the original surf instrumental tune "Kook Song" to introduce the electric set. With H the H banging the skins and Radical Doug on bass the rhythm section was solid! Karl and I fronted the act, and Mike starred on the tenor saxophone. Konspicuosly absent was our first lead guitarist Wave Dave, who is in a mystery destination in the Caribbean, and Christina who is temporarily out of the action.

We're going to play more parties soon, so invite us to entertain your friends and alienate your neighbors !!! We might even bring in a trombonist, that would really be nice for the surf set...

Finally, yes the theme from PETER GUNN is on the play list and its in a medley with the Clash's BRAND NEW CADILLAC. I've been trying to figure out how Dick Dale does that guitar solo, but don't hold your breath... you might drown!!

ONE THING FOR SURE: WE GUARANTEE TO GET YOUR BEACH PARTY DANCING... OR YOUR MONEY BACK

Sincerely Yours in kOOkdom,
-KevinO aka KO_OK
