The Washington Area Coffee Contact is an informal, independent,
non-commercial group of coffee enthusiasts organized for the free exchange
of ideas and information concerning organic, fair-trade, and, shade-grown
or bird-safe coffees. With interests in economics, politics, ecology, and
bird conservation, we wish to advance the larger cause of sustainable
coffee. In pursuit of that goal, the participants in the roundtable aim to:
I. increase public awareness of coffee production practices, their
ecological and social impacts, and the root causes of environmental
degradation, which includes the complex market forces behind export
agriculture;
II. provide a neutral forum in which those involved in coffee production,
research, or commerce may exchange contact information and their ideas and
opinions on the ecological and social aspects of coffee;
III. increase the market demand for sustainable coffee, through expanded
public awareness and through better dialogue among professionals,
academics, and entrepreneurs active in this pursuit.
