Bangladesh is a riverine country with numerous canals crisscrossed throughout the country. Also, there are abundant ponds, natural depressions, ox-bow lakes, and wetlands. Fisheries, in Bangladesh context, can be classified into six groups: pond fisheries, beel-haor-baor (natural depressions, ox-bow lakes) fisheries, riverine fisheries, estuarine fisheries, bheri (embankment in rice fields) fisheries, and marine fisheries. In the year 1990-91, a total of 839,000 metric tons of fresh fishes were caught of which 654,000 tons are from inland fisheries and 239,000 tons are from marine fisheries. Fisheries resource is one of the major export items for Bangladesh, particularly shrimp. The total export earning from fish and fish products for the year 1989/90 is Tk. 414,960 million. The shrimp export alone earned Tk.41,431 million. The total pond area for the country is about 362,520 acres. The contribution of fisheries sector to annual GDP ranged from 6.5% in 1972/73 to 4.7% in 1993/94 with an annual compopund growth rate of 4.4% for the 1972/73 to 1993/94 period. The government of Bangladesh has attached high priority in developing fisheries resources, both capture and culture fisheries in the wake of consistently declining protein intake by the Bangladeshi population.
