Upon return to the states I helped to start up the Integration Technology Center for Tandem's Support Center.   During this time I provided Product Support management for Tandem's x.500 Directory Service.  Much of this effort was spent providing fee-based consulting and design, for European Telco clients like the UN's Union Postal Universale in Bern and the Helsinki Telephone Co.  I developed the x.500 training course and quickstart method.  Designed application prototypes and Schemas for industry-specific implementations.  Assisted in developing an early LDAP User Agent as well as a gateway to link the x.500 Directory Service Agents to our x.400 Message Switch.  For sales demos I developed an automated client to x.400 interface via Exchange and Lotus email servers using the MAPI interface.

Moved to Germany to assist with the introduction of Tandem's x.400, FTAM and OSI products at Tandem's prestigious High Performance Research Center.   In this position I consulted with customers all over Europe to design Electronic Mail switches and Message Store solutions for key customers like Union Bank of Finland and Mercury Communications in the UK.  Another key project was an evaluation and testing of four different vendors' x.400 products for Tandem's Unix platform.  Also assisted in large benchmark tests and proof of concept prototypes for key customers.  Assisted with port of Retix's Manufacturing Application Protocol (MAP) to Tandem NSK for Daimler Benz in Stuttgart.

Provided defect support for most Tandem communications software drivers at the Corporate level, in addition to duties of Support Specialist.  This included training customers and field specialists and providing technical product management in the development of new products (OSI, X400, X.25).  Frequently included generating emergency bug fixes and design changes. Travelled to remote sights for problem crisis resolution and third party consulting on joint projects with software houses like Logica UK, ACI, EDS, etc.  Since much of the work was performed in Europe, I transferred in June 1990.

Starting out in Tandem's Repair Depot, I troubleshot and fixed data communications controllers, monitors, and tape drives to the component level.  Improved software diagnostics for quicker problem analysis.  I later was promoted to Engineering Support, providing hardware design changes and troubleshooting suggestions to the field customer engineers.  Developed Application Notes and Field Change Orders for new and obsolete products.

Provided testing and troubleshooting for Intel's early In-Circuit Emulator (ICE-80) Controllers.  Also worked on an early model of a four-line Async controller.

Provided scheduling for tracking and telemetry info for scientific satellites for NASA under contract to RCA. Troubleshot and repaired tape drive and terminal problems for data entry systems.
