We took a Viking Line cruise ship from Stockholm to Helsinki on Thursday, October 17, 2002. We ate dinner on the ship and landed at port around 9 am local time on Friday. We toured the city, via city tram, and saw some very interesting sites, especially the Uspensky (Russian Orthodox Cathedral – see picture below), which had the onion shaped spires. On Saturday, we took a boat out to the Suomenlinna fort, which is a 250-year-old fort (with a small military cathedral) that Sweden built to defend against the Russians on several islands outside of Helsinki. It is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, since 1991. Once we came back to the city, we did a little shopping and site-seeing, then we caught the ship back to Stockholm around 5pm and arrived around 10am Sunday.
